Keystone XL Pipeline news just cropped up.

Read the article. I could understand the farmer in questions hesitancy over the Trans-Texas Corridor... but surely he isn't that ignorant about pipelines? Aren't there any pipelines near Paris, Tx? He could still farm over the pipeline easement (at least we can and do, across all of our pipeline easements here in E Tx.) The article makes it sound like they're simply confiscating the land... no, it's an easement. I wish the corridor would cross my place... I'd make enough off of the easement to build a new house and get a new truck, and in six months, wouldn't notice the pipeline at all... animals would be grazing on it, or crops would be growing...
CTW,
Agreed. But Oil& Gas Shale/Horizontal Drilling...Changed Everything...Upside down...Inside Out...Right is Left...And, Left is Right. No one was prepared for this. Not Public or Private Entities... It has been, IMO, semi-organized chaos, at the least. And it looks like things aren't going to change much, just more and more drilling for other land grabs.
We provide China and OPEC with so much of our $$$$$$. And, We have a problem with Canada building a pipeline. TransCanda has built U.S. pipelines before.
I don't remember an "outcry" per CHK, and Others, JV'ing away U.S. investments to China, Australia, Total, BP, etc., etc.
I know life has changed, but Canada isn't the villian here. IMHO.

Doc, don't know if you grew up out in the country, working the land or not, i.e., I have no clue if your bloodline goes back to your grandfathers making their living off of working out in the hot sun to barely get by. But for many in rural La. and TX, it was tough times. Scratching out a living wasn't for the faint of heart.
Note: The hardworking country thinking was, and still is by certain country folks -- that it's their dang land and they can do whatever they want with it as long as it don't hurt their neighbors.
Then the city brats come along and start tellin' folks what to do. That type of subjective, feather-my-own-nest lecturing don't sit well with country folks.
In TX, because so much of the land was/is scrub-brush, raising cattle took some acres, even though a family could be relatively cash poor. And no, not everyone had O&G. A huge myth. Lame city-folk thinking. And O&G did help build TX (that's true), but it wasn't the only driving force.
Note also, if you want to help move the odometer on O&G so much, why didn't you roll over and help CHK with your land deal? How come you don't swallow your own thinking when it comes to your land? But no, you chose to do what you thought was best for you and your circumstances, not what was best for your neighbors or your state or the O&G biz, no? Was such the subjective application of what benefits you and not the fair-and-objective preaching of land usage to others?
Now, as you know, we agree on many things. But when it comes to telling hardworking country folks what they should do or not do with their land per a fight with big-shot millionaires who are only out to make a buck and really don't care about the little guy, then such piss-ant hypocrisy of such thinking gets my ol' country blood up.
So, nothing personal, Doc. I'm with you most of the time. But sometimes . . . I mean, we just don't have the same perspective on a few of these issues.
sesport II,
This article, APPRO, should be posted on its own. It's that good. IT'S THAT GOOD.
One of the best I have ever read per distribution of Shale production per Canada and U.S.
It makes my Top 10 reads on GHS.
Thanks sesport II.
GoshDarn,
Don't mean to two-step on any Texan's toes. LOL. I count many Texans as very good friends... and Family. And, I have been on TX Ranches where the surface owner has no water, etc. rights, and has no say per anything except what happens on surface of the land. They can't even drill a water well, therefore they dig water "tanks" for their cattle. And, your are right GD, Texans are some of the hardest workin folks I have ever known. Good People!
It just seems a little disingenuous to me, Per the Above TX Farm owner, to cry foul when Texans have always lived side-by-side with the O&G Industry, the Cattle Industry, and Ranching/Farming...Out in the Country... Heck, We have Oil Wells on the Oklahoma State Capital grounds, where I was raised. My Family and I thought it was a BIG Deal to go out on a Sunday Afternoon with picnic basket in hand and go down to the OK State Capital and have Sunday Lunch... us kids just mesmerized by the Oil wells everywhere. Not much money in my Folks back pockets back then either. LOL (My Father came out of the Oil Patch Business...)
But, I had no choice as to the HS horizontal drilling going on in this Shale...No say in where pipes are being laid...not on my property...yet...but probably will be at some point... and, It maybe the eminent domain thing with my property too. I do know that in the "force pooling" of the HS Sections/Unit wells with the HS... I had no sayso. Not an ounce. The State of Louisiana Office of Conservation dictates ALL things O&G. And where and when and how and who per the Drilling and Fracking... I had not a drop of a Yes or No Vote. It was going to happen and that was it. And, It did.
I am the believer in any American having the right to stand their ground and fight for their rights when they believe they are being violated. The Above Farm Owner too. I just disagree with the TransCanada Pipeline being the "issue" for that kind of dispute. As I stated before, Texans have always dealt with O&G Industry pros and cons and managed to live quite well off of each other, IMHO.
As you state, the "little guy" is never considered in any meaningful way when it comes to Industry Building or "High Finance" from out in the "back 40" of the Texas Countryside all the way up to to the Front Steps of Wall Street...or the U.S. Congress. The voices that get heard are Powerful Voices...The "big shot millionaires" have been running this Country since the beginning of our Great Country. Some have cared about the "little guy." But often They have not, and decisions are made with $$$$$-signs and not integrity or dignity or honor. IMO
If I had had $$$$$ signs in my eyes... I would have taken the Bonus offered by XTO and taken the 25% royalty. I did not feel that was a good enough deal...Looking past my lifetime...and looking at my Family's future. Right decision...Don't know, and I won't know probably in my lifetime. But, I have never opposed the O&G Industry doing their Business on or around my properties. I just opposed the "deals" offered to me. And, I have opposed the non-transparent ways in which the O&G, Government, Banking, etc., businesses do their business. I have opposed their "accounting" methods, especially. And I have opposed their lack of full-disclosures per many a subject matter.
Again, GD, I don't know if I made the Right Decision or Wrong Decision per HS. But, I do know one thing. Agree or Disagree... It is always a pleasure for me to hear Other's ideas and thoughts on any subject matter discussed on GHS. I can agree or disagree with any Member of GHS, and yet I will always respect each Member's right to do the same. It has always been a Forum for Free Exchange of Thought, Ideas, and Debate...
And, I respect your points of view. Hopefully, my seeming "piss-ant hypocrisy" is in check. But, I too have a little "hypocrisy" in my soul... As, I suspect all human beings do. LOL
Have a Great Weekend, GD.
DrWAVeSport Cd1 2/18/2012
P.S. I do hope the TX Farm Owner per above gets some satisfaction for their legal stance/dissent. But, I don't believe that "the little guy" in this case will score a 100% win. No one ever does...
sesport II,
The TransCanada Keystone Pipeline will be built. It is in the best interests of The NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT...
(Thanks for the good reading materials...)
...Has anyone out there been paying attention to Iran's Threats to shut down Oil delivery to SIX European Countries... and shut down the Strait of Hormuz.... (?) WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!

sesport II,
Agree per exports. I am speaking of business. Does the U.S. want to have a "business" relationship with Canadians....OR, Does the U.S. want to continue to sit on needles and pins for the rest of time with OPEC and foreign Nations who are not quite so "friendly," to U.S., outside of selling U.S. $4 and $5 gasoline??? We need jobs, and We need to be planning for scenarios where U.S. can count on Canada, and Canada can count on U.S. IMHO.
I see a great need for looking past the idea of exporter per the TransCanada pipeline. Does U.S. not think that if ever "push comes to shove," Canadian oil and the ability to pipe it through U.S. would not be used in a crisis situation? I wouldn't hold out much hope for a Middle East/OPEC enegy "saviour."
Canada exports O&G. U.S. doesn't. Canada exports Oil &Gas to U.S. U.S. needs "trade" with Canada. U.S. needs to deal and build business and political "accords" with Canada... It may be a life saver in U.S. future.
The debate per the Keystone pipeline affecting U.S. gasoline prices Up or Down, or having any affect at all... I can't say. But I do know... OPEC isn't ever going to let U.S. import prices go DOWN. U.S. will remain swinging from that OPEC liquid gold tetherball forever...If U.S. doesn't grow some better domestic "connections, competition, contracts," with Canada. Just my opine...
Who Would "You" trust in a Global Energy Emergency Situation?
I'll take my chances with the Canadians, Thank you.
If the U.S. "Shale" Story and the U.S. Economic Crash of Sept. 2008 have taught me anything... It is that Our Economic Life can change in a heartbeat!
Let's U.S. get Prepared!

Forget Iran
Basics - Iran has 9+Mbpd but 60+M people and unemployment now is >20% if they threaten the Straits - vessel insurance may go up some more BUT it is very high NOW
If they try shut down the Straits - after about one week various forces would take out the entire southern Iran forces and open the Straits and portect the Gulf...
Saudi has a pipeline to RedSea...Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and UAE would hurt more than they do now - UAE make $80-90/bbl so they should have contingency funds for 1-4weeks.
It will be messy... dealing with Iran - no one trusts them to do anything they say or contract...In Dubai anything that went to Iran had to be 100% paid off before it was even put on a truck. they are far worst than even some of our "Landsmen"
Tom
CTW,
And, U.S. will be paying $6 a gallon for gas. Just on the "volitility" of same, in the U.S. Financial Markets. I do believe that The Middle East finds "ways" to "reek havoc" with U.S. Financial Markets. And, IMO, The Middle East gets the upper $$$$-hand every time U.S. consumer pays for "it" at the gas station.
Thanks for the GHS dialogue.
Welcome to the market place - during the depression, my grandparents kept to horse teams for farming in Oklah. because even then they couldn't afford the diesel prices - <$0.25/gal - remember who also delivers the gasoline to us...it ain't emirates petroleum or KSA at the pump...even Iran imports most/all diesel and sells at less than the cost of less than $1/gal.
The MidEast is only doing BUY LOW (bbl on tanker in UAE/KSA <$10/bbl - SELL HIGH $100/bbl = $90 margin - that is good business
I really love doing market analyses - Marcellus vs TX/LA natural gas....and shutting in at $2.60/MMBtus
Tom
CTW,
Been there and Back. I don't want to see Sept. 2008 ever again. 20 Million Americans lost jobs, more lost homes, and bailouts went to Bankers.
The Middle East Can do what they like...And, Do, on U.S. $$$$$.
I, personally speaking, would like My Moneys to Build UP North American Continental Infrastructure, Bank Accounts, Educations, Jobs, etc., etc., etc.
Not Keep Supplementing those in Dubai.
IMHO.
Actually, i think doc had very good point: "Oil& Gas Shale/Horizontal Drilling...Changed Everything...Upside down...Inside Out...Right is Left...And, Left is Right. No one was prepared for this. Not Public or Private Entities... It has been, IMO, semi-organized chaos, at the least."
.
This is all new to everyone - including the operators, at least on this scale of drilling. Our view of natural gas and what's under the ground has totally changed in the last 48 months. It will take years for land use laws will catch up with the reality in the ground. Like 'em or not humans have been creating more laws since about 3,000 BC +/- and we show no signs of slowing down.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
