Jerry, every company has a different interpretation of the "core" area in Texas.
where do you think what counties are in the core of texas

thanks jerry
when plays are defined... core, tier 1, tier 2, at what point does everyone agree? is it when there has been enough drilling to support the theory ,that it is then considered fact? in the barnett, does anyone know how long this process took?
kj
KJ, I would say Barnett Shale areas were fairly well defined during the 2004 to 2007 time frame.
Les, would it be fair to say, it took about twenty years for the barnett shale areas to be defined? is there any reason to think it will take less time to develop and define the haynesville shale?
kj
KJ, that question for the Barnett Shale is rather complicated. The original "core" in Wise, Denton & northern Tarrant Counties was thick, well defined & controlled by Mitchell (later Devon). Mitchell cracked the code for the light sand frac technique in the late 1990's and began developing the core area with vertical wells. Because Devon controlled the core, other players began exploring in areas to the south and southwest where the Barnett Shale is thinner. Because the shale was thinner, these areas required horizontal wells with multi-stage fracs to be economic. During this second phase of development, the remaining economic boundaries were defined during the 2004 to 2007 time frame. So really it did not take many years once development drilling took off.
Jerry, still too early to say in Texas because not enough information is available.
Shelby County, especially south end but probable everywhere. Northern San Augustine County including the City of San Augustine, south end is suspect. Eastern Nacogdoches County. Heavy leasing in southern Nac County indicates probability and the play may reach northern Angelina County. Northern Sabine County probable but unproven. Panola County also has proven Haynesville strata on the western county line with Rusk County south of Henderson, so it's probable across the whole county. I don't know anything about Harrison County.
The current or proven "Core" would probably be a swath from Joaquin to Nacogdoches to San Augustine to the Patroon/Northern Toledo Bend area. Bounded by the area south of Hwy 7 from Joaquin to Nac. (maybe take 95 south from Martinsville to Chireno for the proven area), north of Hwy 21 from Nac (or Chireno) to San Augustine, then FM 353 from San Aug NE to the Patroon area.

PetroHawk currently drilling for Haynesville in the Etoile / Melrose area and Encana South of 21 North of 103 in San Aug. Both of these may change / extend the maps.
