Triangle J Council gets $13M for ‘green’ carsTriangle Business Journal

The Triangle J Council of Governments is among 25 organizations nationally to split $300 million allocated under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Clean Cities program, it was announced Wednesday.

The council will get nearly $13 million for its Carolinas Blue Skies and Green Jobs Initiative, which will fund green vehicles and their fueling stations.

The project will fund 45 E85 and B20 fueling stations, eight propane stations and 132 electric vehicle recharging stations.

Also to be funded by the grant are 55 compressed natural gas vehicles, 363 propane vehicles, 89 hybrid electric vehicles and 56 neighborhood electric vehicles.

The energy department estimates the vehicles would displace 724,000 gallons of petroleum annually.

The Clean Cities program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is working to put more than 9,000 alternative fuel vehicles on the road and establish 542 refueling stations.

The council is a group of municipal and county governments in Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Orange and Wake counties
