John Surma, chairman, CEO and president of United States Steel Corp. (NYSE: X), will officially commission a compressed natural gas station next week at the company's Mon Valley Works. Also on hand will be Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK).

The filling station at the Irvin Plant in West Mifflin is one of two for U.S. Steel; the other is at the Gary Works in Gary, Ind. U.S. Steel (NYSE: X) is both a consumer of natural gas, as well as part of the supply chain that serves the natural gas industry, said spokeswoman Courtney Boone.

"We already have incorporated natural gas into our operations," Boone said Wednesday. "In an effort to be environmentally responsible and economically responsible, we have included natural gas into some of our fleet vehicles."

At the Mon Valley Works, the five vehicles that use compressed natural gas include a tractor that moves steel coils. Boone said there's a significant reduction in the amount of emissions from a natural gas vehicle compared to gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles, as well as a reduction in the cost of the vehicles over their operational life.
