What is the distinction between blogging and posting a discussion?

OK, I admit I'm becoming something of an old fogey on this blogging stuff.

What's the distinction between a blog and a post in one of the discussion groups?

ok mac... you have self proclaimed to be cynical and an old fogey both in one week. lol
i recently inquired as to the same thing. i got several different answers. as best as i can tell in a discussion you should be either asking questions or have some knowledge of the topic being discussed. in a blog, i believe the writer is allowed to expand and "spout" about things from a more personal perspective.. IMHO

I think King John has it about right. From Wiki...you know the one who replaced Webster. lol.

A blog (a contraction of the term "web log")[1] is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site. When a poster begins a post, the expectation is for him or her to interact with those responding.

I compare a blog with a presentation and a forum to a discussion. A blogger may or may not desire to take questions or interact.
For me the main difference as it relates directly to GHS is that simple questions posted to the Blog portion of the site are overlooked by 98% of the members. If it is not noticed in the brief period that it appears as recently added content in the left hand column of the Main Page, it passes from view and disappears unless it receives responses. Most of the blogs I see are by first time posters asking basic questions would be more appropriately posted on a specific group page or to the Main Page. The chance of receiving responses is greatly increased in those locations.
A blog's recognition usually depends upon me promoting it. I do promote or feature blogs that someone has given some thought to...
I think the blogger is telling his story, regardless of the topic. The blogger isn't usually looking for feedback (IMHO). The poster of a discussion is either asking a question, or sharing information.

Having said that, will someone who is UMO start a blog and share your experiences?!?!?!?!
I was thinking more of the technical distinctions in terms of the way this board works. I now see that the creator of a blog has some more control of what goes into the blog, in particular, who can see the blog, who can post, and there are some moderation options.

There could also be some choices made in terms of board policy.

Thanks.
Anybody can write a blog, though I only feature those that offer pertinent info basd on some of the criteria I outline above. Featuring has a direct coorelation to how many will view it. If I feature it, a blog tpically gets 1000 or more views. If its not highlighted...it may not get even 20. The blogger has control over who sees it and if comments are seen.
Before someone blogs, they get this message to read. "Best format for a blog. I select blogs that I think are especially informative or entertaining to highlight on the homepage. This blog will usually be shale/energy industry related, not be a cut and paste, and give the reader's insight on the chosen topic. Further, the following all enhance the quality of the post; 1) A Photo, 2) Detail, 3) Personal Experience/knowledge. The goal of the blog section is to highlight the writers knowledge and opinion.

Questions pertaining to the shale should be posted in the main or group forums. Thanks."
Blog? What's a blog? Some gooey alien monster? Run!!!!
