Current application with TRRC lists this as the MM Vann survey but with Abstract #A-751 which is actually the MH Vann survey. Not yet sure which one it actually is.

FYI - the MH Vann survey also has the Noble/Petrohawk Peace Well which is also listing a completion depth of 20,000'.

The permit for the Peace well is listing 4 targets.

1) Haynesville
2) Bossier
3) Cotton Valley
4) Wildcate

The Peace well permit is also stating the the Wildcat deep verticle bore is for exploritory test purposes only but that the well will be completed as a horizontal Bossier or Haynesville well.

Make me really wonder what they are testing for under the Haynesville and Bossier?

Any info out there regarding the previous history of any viable/extractable gas reserves out of the Smackover?
20.00 ft. should take the well below the LouAnn salt and the Werner into the Eagle Mills. The question is what "are" they looking for, this question has been asked on this site previously but a couple of people on previous threads insist the depth applied for includes the horizontal run. A previous respondent claimed to have called the TRRC and was told that the horizontal run is not included in the depth permitted. I also have called the TRRC and got the same response.

They are looking for something, CHK has been permitted for at least two other wells in Shelby for 18,000, and I believe the number is 3. Devon is permitted for 2 at 17,500, XTO 1 at 18,000 and Marathon 1 at 17,500.

Too many companies spending a lot of money in Shelby, and I don't think they are doing it for nothing, as the costs get exponentially higher the deeper you go. They have either found something (why keep going to the expense) and are trying to determine the limits, or they highly suspect something but have not found it yet. It would be interesting to know if anyone has gone this deep in DeSoto. It is probably a coinsidence, but these deep wells appear to be at the basal extremities of the Sabine uplift.

I don't claim to be a geologist, but research indicates that the presence of oil at these depths is all but ruled out due to the high pressures/temperatures at these depths, this assumption is made including the heat dissipating quality of the salt, but it does not rule out the possibility of wet gas below the salt.

If anyone cares to follow up on the TRRC info on depth permitted, it is a toll free call.

Any info from you geo types would be greatly informative and appreciated.
the total dept is the vertical + H lateral leg not just the vertical.
have you verified this with the TRRC, I know this is the case in Louisiana but the TRRC says just the opposite is true. If you have a better source than the TRRC please inform and i will stand corrected.
This well is permitted to 20,000 ft., the horizontal leg is 5,550.64 feet, thus if the horizontal is part of the depth permitted that would mean they are targeting 14,450ft..
Correct me if I am wrong but the HS (NorthCarthage/Bossier in Texas} is well above that depth by approximately 3,000 ft. in Shelby.

Someone please call TRRC besides me, Austin 877-228-5740, Kilgore 903-984-3026, Tyler 903-595-5501. If you get a different answer to the total depth question, please inform.
A number of recent permits are showing that the operator is intending to first drill vertical "test" wells much deeper than their intended final horizontal target. Devon-Whitton / Petro-Noble Peace Well / likely this new CHK-Jarry.

Those permits are all stating that they will first drill deeper vertically for exploritory logging purposes but that they intend to complete the wells horizontally in the Bossier or Haynesville formations back up in that 11,000 - 9,500 level.
Back to my original question, I can see individual operators testing one maybe two locations but not three or four in relatively close proximity to each other, as is the case with CHK. Why keep spending the money. Keep in mind that CHK has done 3D seismic over a good portion of Shelby, albeit after the Harvey and Carzanava.

Anyone with any ideas.
I am trying to give a little input to why they may be drilling deeper than the two shales. I read a lot of the explanations on this web site about why XTO was purchased by Mobil-Exxon. They said that Mobil-Exxon needed help in Europe with Horizonal drilling. On the day the purchased was announced I talked with a friend of mind in Benton Louisiana & he told me that XTO had found oil under the shale. He is the only one that I have heard say that. So I don't know if that is true. Not trying to start a rumor, just telling of my conversation.

Grumpy,
Would you please expound on your statement "these wells appear to be at the basal extremities of the Sabine uplift"
Thanks
Here is something that I have been considering. Recently Macmoran Exploration anounced they drilled 28,000 thousand feet off the cost of LA in 20 feet of water and found Woodbine and Tuscaloosa sands. This is their Davy Jones field. 28k is below the salt in that area. These sands were to have been deposited there during massive floods when most of Shelby County was under water. At 28,000 feet, their find is a dry gas producer.

These same sands formed the East Texas Oil field north of us. So what if these same sands are now below the salt in our area. Is oil or a massive gas prospect from sand out of the question?
