Seismographic Survey from Global Geophysical Services

Has anyone been contacted from Global Geophysical Services for a seismographic survey? I've received a letter from them asking for permission to do this survey on our land, basically surface rights only for one year. They are offering $25 per acre and claim that there will not be any damage to the land, just 3.5" holes that they plan on filling when they are finished. Are there any negative consequences to signing this and does the compensation seem fair?

This survey that global is doing, as well as other companies, is not as personal as Linda made it sound. Thats OK, it is not "our survey" The survey covers hundreds of square miles, your property just happens to be within the survey area. If the letter is from Global Geo then it is for a seismic survey. The time expires when they are through and it could take a year or two before the whole job is over. There could be damages from driving to the holes and you should see if someone local could check that for you. Rather than hiring an attorney to read a simple document I would hire a forester to walk the property after the holes are drilled to check for timber and rut damage. It is not malicious in nature when damages are done and they are responsible for the repairs. For the company contact person to say there will be no damages is a bit mis-leading. There may not be any and that is good but if its wet then there may be ruts, if it is planted pines or otherwise thick timber then there could be timber damage.
All in all, sign the permit, let the seismic get done and let the wells be drilled.

Thank you Linda. Would you or anyone else have any recommendations for attorneys in the area? I live in Chicago and the attorneys here are not experts in energy. We would like to hire someone who really understands this field and can advise us on all of the leases/contracts that are coming our way.

We had our siesmographic survey done last year by Cajun Exploration for Chesepeake Production company. The normal fee that is paid after testing done is $25.00 an acre. You need to make sure that your paperworks states in the contract that is not for mineral leasing at all. No one should have surface rights but you. It will state on the contract that you signing your permission for this is good for either 1 or 2 years. I hope this is what you are referring to when you are talking about SURFACE RIGHTS. Read the contract well or get an attorney to look at it for a charge of about $50.00 if you are not sure about the language on the contract. There is no damage to your property at all. By doing this testing it helps tell them where and how many wells need to be place on your section.
