How long can a well go with no production yet still hold a lease in production?

most leases specify 90 days. Some also may specify that a well must be producing at a commercial level...a very grey area by design. check out other threads on that issue.
This lease is 20 plus years old. It specifies that the lessor is to pay the lessee X amount of dollars each year if no production. Most of the homes have been sold and the property owners are not the ones who signed the leases, but they do own their mineral rights. Most were not aware that there was a lease on their property until they checked records to see if they had their mineral rights. Sonris reported 5-1/2 years with no production. Can the company that holds the leases claim that they couldn't pay the renewal fee if the home owner didn't notify them that they were the rightful owners?
Not sure about the electric meter. It is currently producing. Most people have not received any payments since they were not even aware of a lease on the property. Thank you for your time. About 60% of our neighborhood appears to be locked into this lease.
