According to the Star-Telegram, the City of Mansfield asked Chesapeake Energy to build waterfalls to beautify a well site.
Worried that gas drilling could scare away home buyers from a prime spot nearby, the City Council came up with what might be a unique idea.It asked Chesapeake Energy to build waterfalls on the two most visible corners of the would-be pad site at Broad Street and Texas 360.
The city has long envisioned residential and retail development nearby, so Councilman Cory Hoffman came up with the idea of waterfalls to make the well site more aesthetically pleasing.
"As far as I know, there's not any drill sites with waterfalls," he said.
The council approved the idea this month, calling for a brick wall to the east side of the driveway with a built-in waterfall, and a 60-foot wall on the northwest corner of the property that includes a waterfall with the landscaping.
But the waterfalls may not be enough to persuade people to buy houses near a gas well, said Ronnie Hall, a representative for the owner and developer of a neighboring 17-acre site.
"It's somewhat ameliorative," Hall said. "But behind that waterfall is still a giant, noisy drill rig."

Perhaps they can take some cues from the City of Long Beach in Calif. The photos below are actually rigs about 1/2 mile offshore that have been masked to look like islands complete with 60's architecture:

MANSFIELD -- Waterfalls were wiped off the slate for a gas well site at Monday's City Council meeting.
Concerned that a planned gas well site could discourage retailers and home buyers from settling nearby, council members made a unique request at the council's last meeting: that Chesapeake Energy install waterfalls on visible corners of a would-be pad site at Texas 360 and Broad Street.
The city has long envisioned retail and residential development along the Texas 360 corridor, specifically where it merges with Broad Street.
But Monday, Chesapeake representatives asked the council to reconsider the request, and it did.
Council members opted to go another route, this time requesting that Chesapeake coordinate with Kroger Marketplace, which is planning a store to the north of the intended pad site.
Mayor David Cook said he would like to see the site blend with the grocery store, using similar building materials.
Justin Bond, a public affairs supervisor for Chesapeake, said the company is already in talks with a Kroger developer and plans to follow through with the council's request to blend the pad site with the store.
A special-use permit passed with a 5-2 vote, with councilmen James Rudnicki and Cory Hoffman voting no.

Yo, Aubrey, pimp my drill site
Los Angeles is known for hiding drilling rigs in plain site -- such as a drilling rig on the grounds of Beverly Hills High School. There's a bit of logic to it all -- one of the most exclusive cities in the U.S. (if not the world) wants to protect its property values.
The City Council in Mansfield, Texas is getting in on the act, too, reports the Star-Telegram:

It just goes to show no city, even in the Heart of Texas, is above applying lipstick to swine.
