What Price Are You Getting for Gas? Last Update: March 25, 2011
Hello Everyone,
Here are the latest numbers. If anyone else wishes to participate and provide data for my survey, please follow the instructions below. I welcome all data.
I am now asking each respondent to provide me the following:
Section/Township/Range -- everyone (if you are in Texas, tell me your county, and the survey)
If you get your check from Chesapeake, please tell me:
Price received (before severence tax)
Does your lease entitle you to cost-free royalties?
If you get your check from one of the others, please tell me:
Company you leased to
Company who is operating the well
Gross price
Please tell me each deduction, and the amount.
Net amount (before severence tax). [I know, gross minus deductions ought to equal net, but I just want to make sure.]

I think you are right. Many wells are waiting on pipeline and will be coming on line in the next 6 months. I am patient, and I hope all GHSers will eventually participate.
Now, for more good news.... A second respondent has had good conversations with Chesapeake, and expects to receive more money as his payouts are going to be corrected.

I am sure there will be a few happy shalers that ultimately get positive results after talking to CHK. It appears one is going to get more because they have a cost free royalty clause that was overlooked. But it still does not answer the question as to why many without a cost free royalty clause that leased with other operators appear to be receiving a higher net price for gas than those without a cost free royalty clause that leased with CHK.

Land leased in the center part of DeSoto parish will be producing within
the next 6 months or so. Pipeline right of way was extremely hard to come by. I'll contribute data when available. I like the spreadsheet idea
and be sure, please, to send it to Chsp with a note about your large
readership and participation here..It might make a difference!

CHK emphasizes that the BTU factor impacts the natural gas price paid. In June ours was 972. Is this good, bad or what? From my understanding, one cubit foot of natural gas should equal 1028 BTUs. Based on that standard, 972 BTUs would be almost 95% of the standard. Is this a fair method of calculating if CHK chooses to lower the gas value based on BTUs?

I think so, but I'll let others weigh in too. Ultimately, the value of your gas comes from the amount of energy that is released when it is burned. I don't know why, but some gas releases more energy upon burning (high BTU gas) than other gas (the low BTU gas). I'm speculating here, but I'll guess it has to do with the presence of other hydrocarbons (e.g., ethane, propane) that may not have the same heat of combustion as methane. (That's a guess.)

Its not just the level of hydrocarbons, but you can have other trace gases as well. For example it is not uncommon to have some C02, which does not burn therefore reducing the btu level of the gas.

Hi all,
I have temporarily pulled all results from this discussion. Two of the respondents are having their payments revised by Chesapeake. I am trying to get a good handle on everyone else's deductions before I post again. I have sent friendship requests or emails to many of you, so I can ask you more detailed questions. Please respond, and I will soon update the data and post more accurate numbers.

Henry---your work is paying dividends if two royalty owners are getting revised payment-- I vote those who get increases due to your hard work and time should maybe send gift cards for dinner out at a fine steak house or something to you or make donation in your name to charity or chruch of your choice :) just IMO---Thanks for your work and inprovement in all knowledge on this site

As a preview of what is to come... I'll be posting soon. The gap between CHK and the others is shrinking. Some of the huge gap was due to the two landowners who were being underpaid. Some of the gap shrinks as I got a better handle on deductions from the others. We need more data to see if the gap is real or not.
