RANGE SUCCESSFULLY DRILLS FIRST HORIZONTAL WELL AT EAST TEXAS COTTON VALLEY

This article is about a Red River County well but, since there is no RRC Group, I am posting it here. I thought it was interesting.

International and gas exploration, development and production company, Range Resources Limited ("Range" or "the Company") is pleased to announce that it has reached total depth in its Ross 3H exploratory well, the Company's first horizontal drilling venture. Located in Red River County, Texas, the well reached a total depth of 8,900 ft (2,715m), with a horizontal section of approximately 3,400 ft (1,040m).

Based upon open-hole logs, samples, and consistent oil shows during drilling operations from both the vertical pilot hole and horizontal leg, Range and its partners have successfully run and cemented in place a production liner to target depth, with completion operations having begun. Once fraccing has been completed, Range will be able to accurately report on flow rates and update reserves.

Added Pete Landau, Range Executive Director, "The Ross 3H represents yet another milestone for the Company as we and our joint venture partners continue to apply the most cost-effective oil field technology available to our exploration and development programs. Consistent with our recently announced acquisitions in Trinidad, the East Texas Cotton Valley play represents a low-cost opportunity to build our portfolio of crude oil reserves in a period of strong commodity prices."

I'm still puzzling over how anyone came up with "the Company's (Range) first horizontal drilling venture" and can only think they meant to add "in Red River County" or "in the Cotton Valley field"...

Jffree1, That is interesting to me. I live in Cass county. I'm curious if that works in the cotton valley could they go back a drill horizontal in existing wells? I also wondered if the Travis peak, Pettitt and Smackover could be drilled horizontal.

I'm sure that if a horizontal profile appears to possibly be more profitable (in those fields) than a vertical, someone will try it... at least once.  Cabot has drilled some horizontal Pettit wells in San Augustine County.

btj, from all the information I have seen all the above could be drilled horizonal.  This could be a thing of the future that becomes common.  Tom Bennett.

Vertical wells must have the correct casing sizes to accommodate a re-completion as a horizontal.  If not, a new well would be drilled.  Also existing vertical wells may not have ideal surface locations for horizontal development.  There are currently a number of horizontal CV wells in N. LA. and at least one Mooringsport.

Those intersted might want to look into the Jon Morris #2 - API 387-30583. It was permitted by Crest, and drilled in fairly close proximity to the Ross #3H. Also, its oriented almost perpendicular to the Ross #3H. Finally, production data is available, starting out with 609 bbl in April 2010, and declining to 117 bbl in January 2011. Lets hope the orientation of the Range well, coupled with whatever was learned from the Jon Morris #2 makes the Ross a better well......
