Nationwide, the rig count is down by about 400 from last year. LA is about flat.
Oree, nationwide the gas rig activity has decreased from a peak of 1600 in late 2008 to 1100 last week. Most of this reduction has occurred in the Rockies, Permian Basin, Oklahoma & South Texas. Rig activity in the Haynesville Shale in Louisiana has stayed flat at ~ 55 rigs. Check out the following group for more information:

Overall, this is generally what happens when prices become weak, especially in areas that have high drilling costs. The need to drill expensive leaseholds may be keeping NW LAs rig count stable. (that and the rumor that CHK has its gas hedged at higher prices may be true, allowing them to continue in this weak market.
I had the crystall ball last, but I dropped it and broke it....
I am out of a job for the first time in my 9 years in the oil field and its not looking good I have called every drilling company in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, mississippi and Louisiana even some canadian based companies they all say we are stacking to i don't know what to do myself I have went from making $75,000 a year to making nothing and they gave me a whole days notice. My family depends on me and I am at my ends.I will have to try to find another trade I suppose. While I can find anything. Boy i hope Obama's Plan works cause the economy is looking worse everyday.Any one hear of any jobs for a driller or hell any position at this point would be greatly apprecaited. e-mail me at: rsaigarrison@comcast.net Thank You Robert
here is some #'s that I have found--ecco drilling 7 rigs 5 stacked, unit drilling 23 rigs 11 stacked, pioneer drilling 23 rigs 7 stacked, pattterson drilling 46 rigs----29 stacked. rig rates must go down before stacked rigs get out of the grass.
Good luck to you Robert. I've been in this biz for over 30 years and these cycles are horrendous. One thing we do know is that it will turn around. However, when you are in your position, "when" is more important than "is".

And I wouldn't hold my breath or bank on the "Obama Plan". All it is is a redistribution gimmick and won't impact things in the short term.
Let me know too! My husband got laid off about 1 1/2 Mo. ago for H&P Drilling! We know how you feel, honey!
Baker Hughes has a very interesting interactive map of drilling rigs on their website. They show 8 rigs working Shelby County Texas now. 5 in San Augustine (nrthwst area) pretty much all in the County Line area. Nacgdoches County has 12.

Good website. You can track rig activity anywhere in the world.
