Natural Gas Vehicle Conversions Why Don't Americans do this

American Auto Shops can do this

Natural Gas Vehicles
Converting your vehicle to run on natural gas

If you have an existing vehicle that you would like to convert to natural gas, a certified conversion shop can do this for you. The after market conversion leaves the existing gasoline system intact and adds the natural gas package to the vehicle. Enjoy the benefits of natural gas, while extending the range of the vehicle, by allowing you to switch between the two fuels.

The installation of a natural gas system includes a cylinder that is mounted underneath, in the back of the truck or in the trunk of a car. One 70-litre cylinder equals 18 litres of gasoline and weighs approximately 160 pounds.

Sounds great, but where do you fill up?

The price for n.g. listed here is far below the price you get for residential service, so the numbers quoted above are a fantasy since there are almost no public cng fueling stations. (Also, what good does it to have a vehicle you can't take on the road?)
It's a DUAL fuel system. Gasoline AND CNG. You get the best of both worlds. A no lose proposition. CNG is still cheaper than gas right? Once you do the conversion, you install a home CNG refueling station for a few grand and off you go. CNG for local running around and gasoline for your long trips or if you run out of CNG. They were doing this in Arizona 8-10 years ago but kind of petered out when the big tax break for the conversion was exposed as a scam for a state legislator.
cng is not cheaper than gasoline at current prices if you are paying the residential rate. Keep in mind that last month Centerpoint was charging homeowners almost $12/mcf.
On a btu equivlent, 8 gallons of gasoline = 1 mcf

so...at $12/mcf, your paying the equivlent of about $1.50 a gallon. I paid $1.74 on satuday for unleaded gas. It will take a long time to make up the cost to convert to cng, not to mention the costs of the home fueling compressor which will have to be installed by a lisnsesed plumber.
Haha, why all the hatin' on CNG? Prolly take a less time to make up the costs when gas gets back to $3.00+ a gal.
I'll just wait till the cost for a cng car is comprable to gasoline version, and for commercial fuel stations.

I work for a company that explores for oil and gas, so I like using gasoline as well.

Of course, if the government wants to give me a financial reason to switch............
Ok , with a diesel conversion you more than double mpg, add about 40% to HP , you burn cleaner and you reduce engine wear. Yes the cost savings is not there right now but who thinks that gas/diesel will stay at these levels? Oh I forgot we will be getting a stimulus gas card so no need to worry, free gas for the people coming soon to the mailbox in front of your house. But if you wish to do this here are some links.
