units they can have multiple sections in a unit. I asked drwave the same question today.

Oh wow...lets clarify. I think I posted this same thing in a thread 3 days ago.

Sections are things that we use on maps to identify areas in a Township.
An identification include a Township, a Range, and a Section.

There are 36 sections in a township. Each section is 640 acres, or 1 square mile.

For the purposes of horizontal drilling, GENERALLY a unit is the size of a section. This is not always true though. A unit is however big they make it. You can have a 80 acre unit.. Just know that for these "shale" purposes, it will generally be 640 acres, 1 square mile, 1 section.

When they say section being a unit, do they mean a section as it's shown on the map or a radius around the well?
I mean if someone's land was near the section line and a well was drilled near the line in the next section, say a thousand feet or so away, would that property be included in the unit, even though he was located in the next section map wise? Or would he have to wait for a well to be drilled in his section, as showing on the land maps?
