BATON ROUGE - It doesn't make sense for the state to encourage local governments to utilize hybrid vehicles and ones that run off alternative fuels - especially natural gas - but prevent law enforcement agencies and emergency vehicles from doing it, says Rep. Jane Smith.

In House Bill 70, Smith, R-Bossier City, removes the prohibition and clears the way for all public safety vehicles to take advantage of an abundant resource. The House Local, Municipal and Cultural Affairs Committee Thursday granted unanimous approval of the bill.

"With the Haynesville Shale (providing a plentiful supply) and natural gas fueling stations being built, law enforcement and emergency vehicles should be allowed to take advantage of this," Smith said.

HB70 now goes to the House for debate
