"Caterpillar and Westport will also develop technology to use the fuel in Caterpillar's engines employed for applications such as electric power, industrial, machine, marine and petroleum.

Caterpillar, the world's largest maker of earth-moving equipment, will fund the development of the engines, the companies said in a statement. Commercial production is expected to start in about five years.

Many oil and gas producers are also moving away from diesel to power their drilling rigs."

Sesport, Reuters headline was a bit truncated as the key was the engines will be used for locomotives and mining trucks.  Wesport already has an extensive line of natural gas engines for light, medium and heavy duty vehicles.  Also, Caterpillar is the largest supplier of large stationary natural gas engines for industrial and power generation applications.

I guess the biggest changes would be the fuel delivery to the cylinders, a provided spark, and the compression ratio.

Max, it is likely to utilize some version of Wesport's LNG dual fuel technology which uses diesel as a liquid spark plug.
