CLEARWATER – The City Council on Jan. 14 unanimously gave the Clearwater Gas System the go-ahead to build a compressed natural gas filling station on Hercules Avenue, next to the Clearwater Airpark.

CGS will pay $750,000 of the $1.2 million cost, and a grant will cover the rest.

Initially, the station will fill Clearwater’s city vehicles, starting with garbage trucks. Eventually it will fill other cities’ garbage trucks, corporate fleet vehicles and private automobiles.

It is estimated that each CNG garbage truck will save $18,300 in fuel costs compared to a similar truck with a diesel engine.
