Lightweight CNG tanks brightening outlook for light-duty trucks

Submitted by Don Bain on Tue, 08/09/2011 - 13:59 A manufacturer of ultra-light weight high capacity compressed natural gas (CNG) storage systems, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc., has just received an order for 200 fuel tanks from a large US natural gas vehicle convertor of light-duty trucks.

Quantum tanks make relatively simple vehicle conversion possible, eliminating the heavy structural reinforcement necessary to the utilization of heavier tanks.

Lightweight tanks also lower operation and maintenance costs while improving mileage and payload capacity. Lightweight tanks enable trucks and buses to carry much more fuel, operating for long distances without compromising their driving characteristics.

"We are pleased with the repeat business, and positive feedback from integrators and customers on the product quality and upfront and on-going financial and operational benefits of using Quantum's lightweight CNG systems," said Alan P. Niedzwiecki, Quantum's President and CEO.

With the current volatility of the markets coupled to an unpredictable price for gas and diesel fuel in the long run, fleet managers can save from 30 to 70 percent of their operating costs by converting to cleaner burning natural gas. The California Energy Commission states natural gas-powered heavy-duty vehicles reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to 23 percent and particulates up to 95 percent as compared to conventional diesel-powered models, thereby saving money and running greener.

Such existing systems and capabilities are part and parcel to fulfilling the goals of the Obama administration’s CAFE requirements, even though those only apply to manufacturers.
