Frank, 

You want to point off 3 places from the right. It would be 12.345 MMCF. So the well is producing 12 million 345 thousand cu ft. per day. Each "M" equals 1000. So it would be a 1000 x 1000.

Thanks! Does that mean that when I'm looking at a Sonris report for a month, I should take the number they give, add three zeroes, and then divide by thirty? That'll give me that well's production in millions of gallons per day?

Yes and No.  If they state it in MCF then yes. But no it won't be gallons it will be cubic feet of gas.

You are assuming in you calculations that the well produced for thirty days. That may or may not be the case. Over a month's time the well may be shut-in for any number of reasons for short to long periods. They won't tell you that on SONRIS. So the way you are figuring it will be an average production per day over a month's time period. I hope we are on the same page here.

Joe, it sounds like Frank's "12345" MCF is MONTHLY production, not daily.  If so, the average DAILY production would be 411 MCF per day or 0.411 million cubic feet (MMCF) per day.

Everywhere else but the gas industry, "M" means "million."  Unfortunately, the gas industry uses "M" to mean "thousand." 

 

So,

MCF means thousand cubic feet.

MMCF means million cubic feet.

 

MMBTU means million BTU.

 

1 cubic foot of gas gives you 1000 BTU.  (Roughly, depends on the content of the gas.)

 

So

1CF = 1MBTU

1MCF = 1MMBTU

 

Gas prices are usually quoted as dollars per MMBTU.  This is roughly dollars per MCF. 

 

SONRIS reports "GAS PROD (MCF)."  This is monthly MCF.

 

12345 MCF is 12.345 million cubic feet (MMCF) per month.  That's an average of 0.411 MMCF per day. 

 

By the way, SONRIS usually reports "allowables" and "potentials" as MCF per day.

M is the roman numeral for 1000. C is for 100. so MCF is 1000 cubic feet, ccf is 100 cubic feet (used on your residential bill).

 

Its really not that complicated

Well, if they want to list 2,345 cubic feet as "MMCCCXLV" cubic feet, it's OK to use "M" for one thousand. 

 

However, right or wrong doesn't matter.  If you see a number dealing with natural gas, "C" probably means "hundred" and "M" probably means thousand.

So if they report on the RRC form under gas/casinghead gas-MCF, dispositon, volume column for the montly report that would mean they produced 400,000 mcf for a month and that would be equal to 400 MMCF?

Lee, my apology as I spoke too quickly.  You are correct.  Wherever we see MCF, think 3 additional decimal places - 400,000 MCF = 400,000,000 CF.  When we convert to MMCF, we subtract three decimal places - 400,000 MCF = 400 MMCF.  Sorry for any confusion.
