SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Natural-gas futures pared some gains on Thursday after the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that supplies of natural... rose 90 billion cubic feet for the week ended Oct. 4. Analysts surveyed by Platts were looking for a rise between 93 billion cubic feet and 97 billion cubic feet. Total stocks now stand at 3.577 trillion cubic feet, down 138 billion cubic feet from the year-ago level and 55 billion cubic feet above the five-year average, the government said. November natural gas (ngx13) was at $3.73 per million British thermal units, up 5 cents, or 1.4%. It was trading at $3.76 before the data.

In researching the decades-old Tuscaloosa Trend and the immense wealth it has generated for many, I find it deeply troubling that this resource-rich formation runs directly beneath one of the poorest communities in North Baton Rouge—near Southern University, Louisiana—yet neither the university ( that I am aware of) nor local residents appear to have received any compensation for the minerals extracted from their land.
