Sorry to impose on the main page with this, but the group for NG vehicles seems to have disappeared. Or else my glasses need cleaning? lol

Don Briggs has an op-ed piece in today's (Sun.) local paper regarding the recent CNG Symposium. In the article, he mentions a local coalition begun to promote ngv's. Here's some more information about these vehicles, as well as a link to the tax incentives for both business & home refueling stations.

Here's the agenda from the symposium, names & contact info is at the bottom.

Also, James Smith, of KTBS Channel 12, recently aired his own op-ed piece touting ngv's and the potential for converting the local GM plant to an ngv plant. Thanks, Mr. Smith!!!

This is a great post for the main page. How cool would it be to refill one's one vehicle from home? That in itself would save on energy consumption especially for folks living in rural areas.
Thanks, Parkdota. It is promising news.

There has been debate in the past regarding safety concerns for home refueling. And, I believe it does take overnight to refill at home. Right now, I think it's more practical to offer the option of ngv's as opposed to plug-in hybrids. I'm not sure the power grid could handle a surge of plug-in hybrids right now ... maybe down the road.

Now, who has a link/contact info for that local coalition???? I'm sure there are some around here that want to get on that bandwagon!!! hmmm.....

Sesport, actually plug-in hybrids could be easily done. There is a little initiative going on out west called distributed generation. By building many small power plants close to load centers you reduce the energy loss in power transmission. Just think - you build some small 10-20 MW power plants strategically located throughout the Haynesville Shale area fed by local natural gas supply. Maybe it gives local residents cheap power so they can essentially power both their cars and homes with Haynesville Shale production. Oh - and of course cheap power and available natural gas should promote new industry moving into NW Louisiana. Next - expand local universities to generate a highly skilled local work force to fill all those new energy and industry jobs. And of course we need to build some nice new resorts on the local lakes so people have a place to wind down and relax after a hard week in the field, plant, school, etc.
Les - That initiative sounds promising, too. And better than some of the other options. Any idea of cost to build? Sounds like it's more like R&D right now. How long would iit take to expand to other areas? And is it more cost effective and energy efficient than co-gen? I was thinking co-gen could take the load off the grid so that residential consumption wouldn't be effected and plug-ins could come into use.

I'm just thinking we could get the ngv's on the road quicker right now since they've been in use in other parts of the world already.

thanks for the input 80)
Sesport, I do not have any cost numbers. In California the local utilities are promoting both NGV's and PEH's to give people plenty of choices. Both work and can handled by the local infrastructure since they are refuelled/recharged overnite when demand is low.
I'm all for it. And think about it, one could tap off the car to hook up a blazin' bbq grill. I say, GHS tailgate party in late Sept!!!! I will bring the brats and weiners. BYObeverages.

Sesport, that is great info. Thanks for that.
Awwwright!!!! Hook up two 4-cylinder engines and we'll be blazing with a V-8! Now, that'll roast some chickens (just not mine), or cook come geese!

Hey, I didn't know you have little tykes, but surely you don't mean that they're undisciplined! You might want to be cautious about feeding that hot dog some of that BBQ, though. Pancreatitis (correct spelling?) ... YIKES!

So, whatta ya think about locations? Probably out by the ole wing-ding-dilly, huh? lol

On a serious note, I went to find the link to the KSLA op-ed piece by Mr. Smith. Not posted yet, the most recent was May 2. If it's posted in the near future, before this thread sinks into oblivion like the NG Vehicle group (ha, ha), I put a link here.

I wonder if Mr. Smith, or anyone else, has passed on the idea of utilizing the GM plant for ngv's to the city council? hmmmmm.....

That would be great for the GM plant. Are they producing any vehicles out there now?

Yes, I have a human brat, two furbaby brats and Johnsonville Brats in the freezer. (And Prince Albert in the can.) {All of that sounds wrong.}
Eh, not everything around here has to be Right, does it? lol

I believe that GM is still finishing orders on the Hummers, then that's it. kaput I could never figure out what the hay they were thinking converting that plant from trucks to Hummers, especially around here in We-B-Trucks country. Even the "Haynesville" gazillionaire from DeSoto didn't want one of 'em, went for the Caddy.

Hey, I'm thinking a "tailgate" tea party for NGVs in the GM parkinglot might get some notice.

Of course, this being the modern age of technology, there is a website for electric plug-ins competing for attention with ngv's. Here's a link to a plug-in vehicle site with a list of vehicles. Some are still just concept cars, others have projected availability dates, I see only 2 that are available now. Base price on the Volt is $40K, on the Tessla it's over $100K (those are the 2 that I see as being/becoming available in the US ) I can't find any that have both good range AND power.

I'll have to admit I had to chuckle a little looking at the pictures as some of them remind me of clown cars at the circus. I'll stop.

And here's the NGV America website. At least they have trucks for the We-B-Trucks folks. lol
