Philadelphia Utility to Avoid Marcellus Natural Gas (1-18-11)

Politicians Run Amok!!!

PHILADELPHIA, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Philadelphia officials on Tuesday directed a city utility not to buy natural gas from the Marcellus Shale until more is known about the safety of the hydraulic fracturing technique used to extract it.

With its largely symbolic gesture, Philadelphia becomes the first major U.S. city to refuse to buy natural gas obtained by the controversial method of hydraulic fracturing, said Philadelphia Councilman Curtis Jones, who sponsored the measure.

The city's Gas Commission, a regulatory body that oversees Philadelphia Gas Works, approved a City Council report that preemptively requires the city to avoid any purchases of gas from the Marcellus, a major gas field underlying about two-thirds of Pennsylvania and parts of surrounding states.

A hopeful trend, Les.  LOL!  IYO,  Is Haynesville production at risk for preemption by Marcellus gas in the foreseeable future?  How much change in market is the Marcellus likely to cause for all the natural gas basins?

Skip, the takeaway is this could happen to Haynesville Shale production also so such actions are not good for shale gas production in general.  In reality all natural gas competes in the marketplace and it is virtually impossible to track and identify the specific source of the molecules.  Hopefully it is an isolated incident as such actions just cost consumers money and create massive headaches without real benefits.

The Marcellus Shale is likely approaching one Bcfd in production but has a slower ramp up rate due to surface and infrastructure issues.  As it increases in production, the Marcellus Shale will displace other supply sources (Rockies, LNG, Gulf Coast, etc) in the Northeast market.

Les - Don't they also receive supply from Canada?

At any rate, it looks like they choose to disregard recommendations from even the most learned?  Seems like they've seized on cherry picking on one recommendation out of several.  I don't see the words "STOP THE DRILLING" in this release, simply a caution with regard to "challenges."

Of course, some former energy CEO/politician may be throwing more money behind certain enviro groups as we speak.

Why does that not surprise me. It's people like this that drove me away from work in NE Pennsylvania back to Oklahoma
I would bet most gas produced today is from fracd wells.  I have a very low reguard for politians when it comes to brains or morals.
If those dumbass yankees ain't gonna buy gas from any fractured wells they're gonna have resort to harvesting cow farts.  All I can say is "Good Luck environazis." JMO
kind of like what i used to hear....  throwing out the baby to save the bathwater..... jwp
add lawyers to that Terry..... jwp

googled the topic above and it's a war up there.

Read several articles from both sides on the overall drilling/fracking in the Marcellus.  Forbes had an article banning drilling in NY state, grassroots environmental groups reported on the ban of disposing of frack waste directly into waterways.

Did see articles stating who is providing money for each side, same old villains.  People with so much money it's practically falling out of their pockets, I guess they have to do something with it.

The politicians have found a new God, shale fracking.  They're falling over themselves to get in line for the money being passed out pushing pro and con.  Don't know who will win, each side is good about reporting the evils of the other side.

Keith, you're doing something right, I saw several articles and links to the GHS.  Most of those links were posted to give people a place to read how we are dealing with this hot potato, mostly common sense.

The safety of hydraulic fracturing debate is not going away anytime soon.  One crowd on the fringe promotes zero drilling, all drilling.  Another fringed crowd on the other side promotes zero environmental rules.  It appeared to me that the 'fringe' crowds are really after something else, dollars to promote their ideals.

Max - The irony?  The city that is a symbol for our country's independence seems to be proceeding perhaps overcautiously with regard to our energy independence.  I won't, however, pretend to know what's best for their water resources.  Just know I wouldn't be quick to jump in places like the East River to water ski let alone get a glass of DHMO to wash down a PB&J sammich.

Thanks for the thorough reading & posting your thoughts,  80)
