I understand on 3-D Seismic you see a "Bright Spot" for Nat Gas--- If this is true can you get a estimate about quantity that is in the formation or only just the Seismic will tell you simply Nat Gas is there. Can operator predict if well will be good gas well or not based on seismic ?

I think you are correct, Joe. I just don't know what the different colors represent.
If I remember right the shot points were red and white streamers and the data points were blue and white. That may vary with different crews though.
In certain areas 3D seismic can be a very accurate indicator that gas is present (sometimes as high as 75% success rate). However, it is very difficult to determine the thickness of the productive zone which, of course, directly affects how "good" a well will be.
JRC,
Patience, patience. Just wait for them to call you. If they are interested they will let you know.
Bob-- Thanks for reply-- so it can be used to correlated if you have a offset well but not necessary if a "wildcat" will be good well or not . Is 3-D very accurate indicator in Shale formations?
What I was told several years ago is that the knowledge and experience of the Geophysicist that does the programming for the interpretation of the data has a lot to do with how the information appears on the printout. We have had a number (6) of Wilcox wells drilled in the last 5 years in the area and all have been dry holes. They were drilled on 3-D seismic data. So nothing is a sure thing, not even 3-D data.

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
