I have a letter from an operating company in Shreveport asking that I sign ratification of an oil, gas, and mineral lease dated June 23, 1940. The minerals are located in Caddo Parish, Pine Island. I've never seen anything like this before. What is it?

I suspect that the royalty is going to a family member, likely a mother or father.  Or that person is recently deceased and the operator is asking for a ratification prior to changing their pay deck to pay the new owner (heir).  That would comport with the ratification instruments I see in the public record.
