Someone recenlty told me about some land they have on a Spanish land grant. The land doesn't have a township range section on Sonris. They know how many acres they have but don't understand how the O&G companies will divide royalties. How does leasing/royalties work in these areas?

So they just make 640acre units in the land grant area. Ok thanks for the information.
So they could make the unit whatever size they want but usually it's 640 acres? This tract of land is in a Spanish land grant that is over 6,000 acres. On sonris there are no TRS labels. Just white. The land owner was concerned they would make the 6000 acres one unit and divide royalties according to the 6,000 acres. I didn't know how to answer the question since I'm used to sections.
The land grants were divided into section, township, range in the 1930s. The Sonris map doesn't reflect this. Go to the LA SLO and look at the maps from the 30s in the historical documents.
Thanks two dogs and KB for your help
A bit of trivia about the land grants. I grew up in North LA. About 50+ years ago I was assigned to a crew doing seismic surveys in south LA. When I looked at my base maps I was completely confused. The individual parcels were very long and very narrow. I later learned why it was done that way. These parcels were laid out when the only form of transportation was by pirogue. Therefore the parcels had a narrow frontage on the bayous to allow maximum number of residents to have waterfront access.
Aubrey, at least they were carved out and designated as sections. The Spanish Land Grants of NW LA were set out in large areas not like the pie shaped pieces along the bayous of South Louisiana, that gave everyone a small piece of waterfront. Like the Samuel L. Davenport et al grant.
She was that with the heirs of Don Antonio Gill Ybarbo.
Aubrey. Not just pirogues. Also steamboats. The very narrow tracts fronting on navigable water bodies are French in origin and called arpents. Mostly located along the Mississippi River but also along major south LA. bayous and, in north Louisiana, along Cane River. Wherever early French settlements were served my major navigable waterways.
Aubrey,
The land grant parcels were commen in North Louisiana also as Skip has stated. Any time you had a navigatible waterway, you could find land grants, usually long and narrow, smaller on the waterway side. Along the Red River, Ouachita River and several other rivers in north and central Louisiana.
Jim,
I agree, all of the Spanish and French land grants were given a section, township and range is the process of the U. S. Government Survey. The government surveyors were given strict instructions to honor all previous land grants, which they did. But they were then given a section, township and range in order to conform to the U. S. government disposition of property that joined the land grants. And the arpent was used as a distance measurement also, but more commenly as an area measurement as you described.
Antonio Gill Ybarbo (1729-1809) was lieutenant governor, chief justice, captian of the militia and founder of Nacogdoches Texas. During his day what is now Shreveport and Alexandria would have been part of Texas. One of his duties as lieutenant governor was to police smuggling but became a smuggler himself. He was banished to the East bank of the Sabine River where he lived for a while but when things cooled down moved back to his ranch in Nacogdoches. His cattle provided food to the Spanish ships that guarded the entrance into the Mississippi River, against the Brittish during the American Revolution. He was born at Fort Los Adaes (Robeline, LA) and is buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery located under the Courthouse in Nacogdoches, Texas.
I was a pirate, in my dreams and as a child at play.
