On again, off again.  The TMS is obviously an intriguing prospect for a number of companies.  And it's good to see Devon in the mix even if they will never issue news releases or provide much detail in their corporate reports.  They are traditionalists and keep everything close to the vest.  Kirk, I think the challenge here is how does a company come up with a completion design that over comes the ductile nature of the TMS?  As far as I am aware there are no analogous ductile shales successfully produced in the U.S.
Skip, I believe that data is emerging to support a succesful completion. As we now know, all shale within a given play is not created equal.  The greater challenge might be keeping the frac out of the permeable and porous Tuscaloosa sands below.
Or locating a TMS area with less clay and is therefore more brittle.  Near Well Bore Permeability has been a consistent problem in all the early horizontal wells that I have seen.

Kirk,

I'm sure you are aware of the Deshotels well. Does this mean that we now have a double play TMS/Eutaw and Austin/Selma  Chalk developing in this area. With a chalk well that has 630 barrels of oil production per day it would seem logical that there would be interest in extending the play East and West and South. Just trying to connect the dots and looking for your input in this.

Skip,

Yes. I'm a participant in the Deshotels #1 and the generator of the prospect.  Anadarko has been aggressively leasing across the Austin Chalk fairway as far east as the western boundary of East Feliciana Parish. In Q4 of 2010, they completed two excellent wells just east of the Tx/La border.  Much more to come in that play.

When you say excellent well - What was there initial production rate and has it held up?

Joe,

The initial rates were listed under your Austin Chalk forum. Yes, they appear to be holding up. Anadarko has had great success over the past five years on the southern side of Brookeland Field

Sorry, that response was for Joe.

Thanks, Kirk

I knew you and Jerry were involved in the Deshotels well. You confirmed my suspicions. Thanks for the additional info.

I do have a question. Why was the liner cemented in the Deshotels well? When I saw that on the completion report I could not believe it. Are there any plans to frack the well and break the cement?

Joe,

The details of this well are confidential.  The best place to follow the status is either on SONRIS or Pryme Oil and Gas' website. They post frequent press releases.

For those interested in the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale, we've added a page to our website focused on this play. It contains maps, logs, cross sections, play history, and recent drilling results.

Thanks, Kirk.  The completed wells listed on the Amelia site as Encore are shown as Denbury Onshore on SONRIS Lite.  For those members who would care to review the specifics, they are S/N 236089 and 237776.
