Question about old wells in Red River-Bull Bayou (DeSoto Parish)

I have a question about what happens to old wells. Once a well is "plugged and abandoned", what happens to it? I did some research on SONRIS and found about 6 or 7 wells that have been on our property since @ 1921, a majority of which have since been plugged and abandoned. When a well is plugged and abandoned, do they remove all of the rig above ground? What is left underground? 56 of our 78 acres in DeSoto is covered by trees, so we are really not sure what to expect. The land hasn't been lived on in years. We were considering actually moving onto the part of the property that isn't currently being farmed, but not really sure at this point if that is such a good idea or not.

This area has suffered immense environmental degradation…
