Larry,

I looked on sonris (Louisiana's database of wells), and found:

The two wells that are permitted in Section 19 are draining Section 18.

There is a permit for a well to be drilled in Section 18, whose lateral will drain Section 19. The permit was issued only a couple of weeks ago, so drilling has likely not begun.

The driller of all these wells is Comstock.

OK.. I'm ignorant. What does it mean when one well "drains" another Section. Do owners of boths sections share the production? Meaning... would I share in the revenue of all 3 wells?

Also, how do I get access to Sonris?

In the right column under Well Information, click "Wells by Section, Township, Range by Parish." The database is pretty intuitive. You can find more information on this forum about how to use it and the problems with the delayed updates.

Often an operator will place the surface location of a well in one section, and drill the lateral (the horizontal part) into an adjacent section. In your case, you will be most interested in the Cobb 19 well. This surface location of this well is in Section 18, but it drills southward and will drain Sec 19. This is the well from which you will receive royalties. The other wells in Sec 19, that go under section 18 will provide royalties to the owners in Sec. 18.

Go to www.sonris.com. On the left-hand side, under "Database Access," click on "Sonris Lite." You will see a box that is called "Well Information." In that box, look for the line called "Wells by Section, Township, and Range." Click on that. Then enter in your S-T-R. Let's say you enter in 18-12N-15W. Up comes a list of 13 wells. The 13th is the one you are interested in. Click on that one.

Scroll down and look under the word "Detail." You will see: "605' FSL & 2426' FEL OF SEC 18. PBHL 330' FSL & 2320' FEL OF SEC 19.

This means the surface location is 605 feet from south line & 2426 feet from East Line of Sec 18. The Planned Bottom Hole Location (i.e., the end of the lateral) is 330 feet from South LIne and 2320 feet from East Line of Sec 19. So this well will drain Sec. 19.

Larry, I have listed the three wells Henry mentioned. Only the Cobb well will have a horizontal lateral drilled and produced from your Section 19. So the mineral owners will share in the gas produced from this well. The Heard & Nash wells will only produce from Section 18. I have also listed the Haynesville Unit for Section 19.

We have minteral rights in 28-12N-15W. We have active wells and are hbp, but leased the lower depths to Chesapeak with a three year term and two year option. It has been one year and seven months since the signing. It seems all the sections around us are in different stages of unitization, permitting, or drilling. How can you tell if a well in another section is or will be draining your section?

Cut and paste from the SONRIS Well Scout for the Comstock Nash 18HZ #001. Note that the surface location is :598' FNL (From The North Line) and 2349' From the West Line in Section 19 and the PBHL (Planned Bottom Hole Location) is 330' From the North line and 2489' From the West Line in Section 18. The perforations in the lateral of this well will be located in Section 18 and mineral owners of record in that section will receive the royalty income.
