I have inheritance from my grandfather that has sat dormant for years.  The only information that I have is from a (long lost relative that I didn't even know I had, in fact 25 years ago he came to Kansas City to visit me and brought me a family history)  he several years later was trying to purchase my surface land from me.  It shows a survey, not a survey for oil but a land survey.  I'm guessing there is a difference between the two.  How can I research this?  In the 1980's we received very small checks for leasing rights and production In Marion county.  I live in the Midwest and don't have easy access to the courthouse.  I also own mineral rights only in Johnson County Barnett Shale which is producing at this time.  So I do have some experience with Texas Railroad Commission Site but very limited.  The only reason that I knew about the Johnson County rights was because a EOG landman contacted me.  I have had contact with landman over the years and one relative in particular (the one mentioned before).  As soon as I head his voice I said "I'm not selling"  He said I don't want to buy we want to give you money.  They had already started drilling in Johnson County.  Marion is a different matter though.  We own land and mineral rights.  Sorry for the long winded question but how can I I follow up on what I have.  I have court house documents showing the deed and who I inherited it from and a survey from the 1930's laying out the land.  I dont think I can find the information from the checks I recieved over 20 years ago.

Thanks,
Larry

I own mineral interest in Marion and other East Texas counties. If you can not run the courthouse records yourself, the best way to know what mineral interest you own is to contact a local abstract company or attorney, and let them run the title for you. You will know for sure what your interest is for future leasing or buy offers. The fact that you my own a surface interest does not mean that you own the same mineral interest in that acreage, as it may have been separated years ago. Leasing in Marion Co. is low and slow at this time, but should be back when the price of nat. gas is back up to $7.00 or higher. You can keep up with what is being drilled in Marion by checking the business section of the Tyler, Texas newspaper website. Good Luck.
Thanks for your reply. I called the court house and checked up on the status. I forgot to ask about mineral rights at the time I was on the phone. I have the volume and book numbers they needed. She mentioned that my land was by The Colony and I called and talked to our lawyer in Jefferson and his secretary mentioned that she thought I was in Berea? When I do a Google map search I don't come up with anything except a road called Old Colony and Berea TX is a good 2 hours from Jefferson so that cant be right. I was just wanting to know where the land was physically located. Thanks to the power of Google you can get a good idea. I'll have to call back and talk to the abstract office and see if they can pin point where the land is located.

Thanks,
Larry
Larry - Barea is about 5 miles NW of Jefferson at the end of Farm to Market Road 728. There is not much in Barea. The last time I was there they had a single store. Most of the community revolves around a Seventh Day Adventist church and school. What survey is the land in question located?
T. Burton Survey, A-23, 33.6 acres Field notes dated Oct 1, 1937 from Earl E. Ferguson, Surveor to A.J. Williams of record in vol 103, page 485 Marion County Tx.
Burton Survey is at the end of FM Road 728. It looks like the community of Barea is located in the Bruton Survey. Checking Drillinginfo.com there was 1 lease executed covering a 20.35 acre tract in 2008 and 1 lease covering 9 acres in 2008 in the Bruton Survey. There is old Pettit oil production a mile or so northwest of the Bruton. In the 1980's 2 unsuccessful Cotton Valley wells were drilled north and NW of the Bruton survey. Not much activity in the area at this time - but hopefully some day
