Representative Christian Meets with Railroad Commissioner About Oil and Gas Waste Disposal Wells - February 27, 2009
On Thursday Representative Wayne Christian (Center) met with Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams to discuss the numerous problems associated with Oil and Gas Waste Disposal Wells, especially in regards to Salt Water Injection Wells. Shelby County Judge John Tomlin and a local disposal well operator accompanied Christian to the meeting. Christian discussed the exceptional situation that is occurring in Shelby County. "The development of the oil and gas industry has brought a significant flow of salt water waste into East Texas. While this is a normal part of the oil industry, Shelby County has become the disposal site for much of the Haynesville Shale from not only the new wells in Texas, but also the state of Louisiana."

"The problem has centered on the single two lane bridge between Logansport, LA and the Texas community of Haslam as well as the concentration of these wells in that small community. An estimated 300 trucks per day are crossing that one bridge to dump the Louisiana waste in Shelby County."

All parties present agreed on the problems that needed to be addressed in this situation, including the public's safety, protection of our surface water supply and the desire to continue the economic benefits of the oil and gas industry in East Texas. Commissioner Williams charged his staff to address these problems and report back to Christian by March 12th, 2009.

Christian is serving his sixth term as State Representative for House District 9, which includes Jasper, Nacogdoches, Sabine, San Augustine, and Shelby counties. His current committee assignments include Vice Chair Criminal Jurisprudence and a member of Business and Industry. He is the President of the Texas Conservative Coalition.
