I know that the smackover has been penetrated in Ashley county. How far east I do not recall. If memory serves me right, and no guarentee, the basin curves slightly to the south east as you go across SE AR into MS. As I do not have immediate access to the appropriate data, nor have spent time working that area of MS, I cannot comment on that!

Does anyone know if or how far east (ie, into Ashley County) that the Smackover exists? Does it extend east along the state line trend into Mississippi?

Yes, hwy 82 runs through/around El Dorado!

I am unsure how far south the play may extend. There have been a couple wells drilled through it in LA south of Union County and a couple or so drilled near Felsenthal. I am unaware of what has been encountered and would like to find out. I can say that at this point, it appears that no one drilling for the brown dense in this area has been willing to spend the money to run laterals and do a multi-stage frac. Until that happens, I fear the play in this area is sorta in limbo!

However, I am aware of an area where one could drill into it and just run the laterals. I wish I had the funds to try it myself. Perhaps in another life!

As a follow up, Union County south of US 82 is part of the speculative brown dense Smackover play. Title offices have been tied up by the interested parties and the locals are having trouble being able to research leases beyond what they already have.

What I see in the weekly report referenced is permits within Smackover Field and completions within Smackover field. I presume that is what is of interest! There are often many such listings from time to time as that is one of the areas of redrill by the local independents. I would not put a lot of stock in it as an indicator of industry uptick. However, If you start seeing a lot of permitted wildcats or deeper infield tests, then I would think that would be a decent indicator.

Per the AOGC website drilling report dated 10/29/2010 -- there was one completion to the Smackover in Union County and four permits for the Smackover in Union County. Does this seem to indicate a pickup of activity in Union County? Or, is this par or sub-par?

JT....Thanks for responding. I plan to be in South Ark. and North
Louisiana in the near future. Maybe we can get together and compare notes.
I usually stay in Shreveport or El Dorado and make the rounds talking
some of the ole oil 'Barons" to see what they know.

It seems as if talk has really slowed down on any activity in Union County.
I have been out of touch lately and clicked online. Columbia County
seems active with Triad and Pinebelt is leasing in Union Parish.
Anyone want to provide some updates......I would like to hear.
Thanks......Jim B.

The AOGC website is probably your best location. Go to http://www.aogc.state.ar.us/permitreport.htm . There is leasing activity in the Three Creeks area (sw area of Union County) but to my knowledge no drilling of the brown dense has been done in that area.
