T15N-R9W: The Third Township-Range to Reach 36 Haynesville Units (1/9/10)

T15N-R9W has followed T13N-R11W and T15N-R15W to become the third township-range to reach 36 Haynesville Unit applications. As you will note, all units are in Bienville Parish. Several other township-ranges are close to also being fully unitized.

Missy, the significance of the "fully unitized township" theme is the greater probability of activity and/or planning for activity in this area. Before going through the very public process of unitizing, companies want to have done all the leasing, trades and other acreage acquisition they can before filing their unit proposals. Unitizing does not guarantee that drilling will occur, but because most companies want to have their units in place prior to drilling, they will proceed in order of drilling priority. Therefore, it would be reasonable to infer "first in, first up" in many cases.

One caveat to that: if the shale quality is not defined over the entire area of the Haynesville Shale, such that you have many higher quality targets and lower quality targets identified, many companies that picked up leases will try to mature units in which they have the largest leasehold interest, or where they have trades already done, or in units easiest to get into a drillable condition. Also, if companies are maturing drilling opportunities well ahead of their drilling schedule, the drilling may not closely follow unitization (especially if gas prices and associated drilling activity drops).
