I was told by a landman who works with Empressa that he had seen an article somewhere that the EPA was concerned that hydraulic fracing of shale's was polluting drinking water. He led me to believe that the article stated that there was the possibility that they were going to stop allowing them to be performed. Anyone heard anything relating to this or is it just a bunch of bull.

tootin' - Thanks again. As I understoond it, there really weren't too many concerns about groundwater/aquifer contamination. Most of the concerns about aquifers revolved around draw down, which, I believe, has been addressed with the order redirecting operators to use surface water (which is replenished at a much faster rate).

The questions/concerns about surface water seemed centered around contamination from run off of spilled chemicals. Dr. Hanson pointed out that there are now 5 monitoring stations established, with 5 more planned to be put in place for the HS play area.

At any rate, even if the feds aren't trying to control surface water issues right now, it seems to me to be reasonably prudent to demonstrate that LA officials are/have been on top of it anyway before a problem does arise.

I've heard the government believes the possibility of that. It's also possible we could die at any moment. So, how will the government regulate that? Oh sorry, it's called health care reform. Sorry, i couldn't help it. jhh
It seems that the landowners and the gas producers are both victims of this "lack of energy" policy. It seems that we should look for more common ground since our interests are best served when we both succeed. The gas producers when they receive fair prices and are allowed to develop our most reasonable source of energy, and the landowners when their rights are protected which allows for the
fair valuation of the product.

GAS DRILLING PRODUCING RADIOACTIVE WASTEWATER

NEW YORK - Over the past several years, companies in north central Pennsylvania and southern New York have been allowed to drill a large number of wells in order to extract natural gas from the Marcellus Shale rock formation.

Marcellus Shale rock is naturally radioactive with the isotopes radon-226 and radon-228. Radon-226 can remain radioactive for 1600 years. When the New York State Department of Environmental Control (NYSDEC) sampled some Marcellus Shale drilling wastewater, they found radioactivity, which exceeded EPA safety standards by up to 26,700 percent.

NYSDEC has been especially secretive and unresponsive to questions about Marcellus Shale drilling water radioactivity. The agency took 13 water samples in 2008 from an undisclosed location and found radiation in 11 of the samples. NYSDEC has not publicly announced how the radioactive drilling water will be safely handled. The agency also plans to allow a major expansion of Marcellus Shale gas well drilling.

"The radioactivity is from 'fracking' [drilling] water and well drilling wastewater," explained Tracy Carluccio, the deputy director of the Delaware Riverkeeper organization. "The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PDEP) is not measuring radioactivity at any gas drilling wells or wastewater treatment plants, so the radioactive discharges are being verified."

High levels of radiation in warm water rivers and streams can cause serious harm to black bass and other fish species. The effects of radioactivity on fish can include cell destruction, genetic mutations, damaged embryos and impaired endocrine systems.

"Wastewater from Marcellus Shale drilling is supposed to go to wastewater treatment plants, not flow onto the ground,' said Carluccio. "But open (wastewater) pits on well drilling sites provide a pollution pathway for the escape of untreated wastewater."

Many states that allow natural gas drilling require the drilling companies to re-inject the radioactive wastewater into the wells. But drillers in New York and Pennsylvania do not have to comply with this wastewater handling method.

As noted, NYSDEC refuses to disclose the locations where the radioactive water samples were obtained. But radioactive water samples have been collected from such Pennsylvania bass waters as the Allegheny River, the Clarion River, Dunkard Creek and the Susquehanna River.

J. Scott Roberts, a senior PDEP official, admitted to a Pennsylvania legislative committee in April 2009 that "there are many pollutants of concern in [Marcellus Shale drilling] wastewater."

Is this a bunch of hooey or what? Ya'll chime in.....
New York currently has a morritorium on Hydraulic Fracking. The is a bill in congress that in passed would require the EPA to regulate it.
What else could we expect from one who combines the words "lethal" and "injection" to form a new compound word?

More "national standards" to come? ... 80P
Lethalinjection - Is your brain fried? You wig out and go on about things you know nothing about.
To read your ranting, one would think you have had a personal encounter (a much needed one) with a NARC, who by the way has more honor in the tip of his little finger than you do in your whole body.
Shame on you - just hope you do not have children - but if you do, the NARCs risk their lives for them too. God be with your soul!

Sorry to all - just could not let it go. Law enforcement - Military - and Firemen are at the top of my hero list.
Amen Shaleeee! Couldn't have said it better myself.
the epa wishes to skirt the states' right to regulate their own business, and suffice to say that the lawsuits have only just begun.

this thread has taken a weird turn, but i would welcome a serious discussion on national drug policy in the political forum if anyone has the cojones to start one.

i can already smell the moral blackmail.
Ahhh, the gauntlet has been thrown down & the challenge issued? Will it be 100 paces to the back pages? Will the challenger take up the cause, follow the muse? Stay tuned!!!! 80)
Agreed. This Administration is so anti-BigOil That they can't bring themselves to support clean Natural Gas. Our reliance on foreign Energy is insane. Buy American. All this noise about contaminating drinking water is made by individuals that do not know how drilling / casing & regulations pertaining to them are done. IMO.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
