I need help in understanding this process: Well is drilled and fraced. No pipeline built yet, BUT now plugs are going to be drilled out to check flow/pressure. Is this normal

KCM, most operators will wait until pipeline is installed before frac'ing the well so it can be flowed back almost immediately. Some operators will frac ahead of the pipeline and then drill out the plugs and flow back the well after pipeline is installed.
Why would they drill out the plugs with no pipeline in sight? They start drilling out the plugs tomorrow. It doesn't make sense to me. They say they are checking to see what the well's production will be and that they can tell this by drilling out the plugs. Well was fraced about 3 wks. ago. I thought a company could tell what the well would produce after it was fraced. Guess I still have lots and lots to learn.
That is what makes this site so useful--people like you who understand this process explaining to lay people like me about this process
kittycatmama,

You can't tell what a well's production will be until there is flowback. If there is no pipeline, the gas will have to be flared while running the test. Are you talking about the Virgina Packert wells in S7-T14N-R14W?
yes
all the equipment left the Packert Well today. Does anyone know if flowback was done. No flares were seen
KCM, as part of the frac'ing process plugs are "landed" after each stage. These plugs have to be drilled out before the well can be flowed back and tested. In the early days of the Haynesville Shale I believe some wells may have been flared during testing but I thought operators would have stopped this practice. Evidently not!!
Who is the operator?
Encana is operator. A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR EXPLAINING THIS.

Why wouldn't they wait until there is a pipeline to test it
Les, a well or two in Pleasant Hill are being flared at the present time - go to GoLocal and then Sabine Parish - I do not know the pipeline status there - but you can see the flare for miles so apparently the flaring process still exist.
I should have added the thread name is New Wells in Pleasant Hill Area . . . May 7 and May 15th post for info on flaring.
Shaleeee, I have a couple of theories regarding why an operator would elect to test a well before the pipeline is available.

1) Potentially under lease agreement terms the operator has to demonstrate the well is capable of producing in "paying quantities" and is simply waiting on the pipeline.

2) Operator wants to test the formation in an area before drilling additional wells.
'
These are just theories with no factual support.
Would they do this test to determine the size of the pipeline that is to go in
