In location report in Times May 2, Encana is listed as drilling to lower, middle, upper Smackover in Sections 26 & 35 of 15/14. When I think of Smackover I think of oil. Does this mean Encana is testing for oil in those sections

Kittycatmama,

Sections 26 & 35 T15N-R14W is the Encana Gas Factory.
I know. These are separate, non unitized listed in May 2 Times new locations. One of these is 12000 depth
The oil producing portion of the Smackover is along the LA./AR. state line where the formation is much more shallow. However, if you review the SONRIS list of Haynesville Shale completions you will notice that the first five Haynesville wells completed in the play were permitted to the Smackover. As you look further down the list you will also see under "Permitted Horizon": Cotton Valley; Lower Cotton Valley; Upper Hosston; Jurassic and Bossier. Obviously the permit does not define the well, only the depth to which an operator intends to drill. Where the well has its perforations determines what kind of well it is. There is a separate section for this data on every SONRIS Well Scout report. There is one point that should also be made to help avoid confusion. A limited number of drilling units were formed with names other than Haynesville although the Haynesville formation was included in the depth interval with other formations. So there are some Haynesville wells that will be called Cotton Valley or Lower Cotton Valley as the unit was approved with that name. The TVD (True Vertical Depth) of a horizontal well actually defines the formation being produced.

thanks for the info. A friend had told me about these 3 wells, but I couldn't find the info on Sonris. Info was emailed to me today. I have never noticed the word smackover in other permits for out here, so was curious
KCM, I believe it was only three wells being drilled into Section 35 (H3, H4, H5) that listed Smackover as their target. This could be in error because all three wells appear to have either the Haynesville Shale or Bossier Shale as their primary target. If that is the case they should list unitised Haynesville as their target since Section 35 has an approved Haynesville Zone Unit.
that is right--only 3 wells were listed as Smackover in Sec. 26 and Sec. 35. they say non unitised too and that is strange wording as they would have had to be unitised--right? This info was in the Times not Sonris
KCM, the same wording was on the three well permits filed by EnCana with the State. But as you said the wells are being proposed to a unitised zone.
