Haynesville Shale & GHS Members Highlighted: "SHALEIONAIRES" on 60 Minutes this Sunday Evening

"SHALEIONAIRES - While some complain that extracting natural gas from shale rock formations is tainting their water supply, others who have allowed drilling on their property are getting wealthy and becoming "shaleionaires." Lesley Stahl reports. Shachar Bar-On and Meghan Frank are the producers."

I was approached by the producer, Shachar, to assist in locating individuals for this segment. Some of you may have spoken to Shachar, or other producers, as well. Because of our assistance, the residents of NW Louisiana will be represented on this segment to its 13 million viewers. 60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7 p.m on CBS. ET/PT. Check your local listings.

Among those interviewed for the segment are Northwest Louisiana residents CB Leatherwood and Mike Smith, who are actually cousins. The 60 Minutes crew spent a day at the Leatherwood residence interviewing both Mike and CB at the same time. If you have seen the Haynesville Documentary, you have seen Mike Smith. Mike was one of the three whose Haynesville story was featured in that documentary.

I spoke with CB shortly after the interview and he told me that he was impressed and pleased with the 60 Minutes crew finding them, “down to earth” and “real nice.” CB's goal was to show them southern hospitality during their visit. And of course, that means good food.

On a Sunday in May, an assistant producer, out of N.Y.C., showed up to screen the couple to see if they adequately fit the profile of what they needed in the segment. When the producer arrived at the Leatherwood’s home, fresh coffee cake and coffee were waiting to be had.

Toward the end of the screening (and coffee cake), CB informed the producer that she could probably find folks that had done “better” (made more money) on the Haynesville Shale. “I didn’t think we’d actually get selected,” Leatherwood added.

[Editor's Note: The producer's found CB a great story teller]

Selected they were and a CBS caravan showed up on the day of the interview with videographers, photographers and producers in tow. It was a typical hot and muggy summer day. The crew got busy and as CB puts it, “they took pictures of everything! Chickens, cats, dogs, mules…everything.”

Lesley Stahl, who would be conducting the interview, showed up to their Sabine Parish home in a chauffeured Lincoln Town Car. After Upon entering their home, Stahl promptly asked, “may I use your restroom and borrow a can of hairspray, I’ve been on a drilling rig all day.”

Welcome to showbiz.

I don't know Cb Leatherwood, but I do know Mike Smith, and he's the real deal. He's just a good ole country boy who has worked hard all his life, and now he's enjoying the good life. And, I for one, am really glad that he has made it BIG TIME!...... Let's hear it for my friend Mike Smith......... yeah!
Both of these gentleman were on solid ground before any talk of the shale.
A lot of us hard working folks were doing okay before the Shale, but now we are doing better! As Jack Blake would say, "long live the Shale!"
Two Dogs,

I loved your sentences: "I can see where 60 Minutes could have stayed with CB for a day. I feel that I could have stayed with him a month and still not heard all the best ones."

I am a local historian in the county where I live. I love meeting guys like CB and I have been PRIVILEGED to have been invited into their homes to look at their old photos and hear their stories. I've been fortunate in the last couple of years to have been able to travel around Oregon and interview men like CB. I still know a few down in La and Tx. Maybe I should plan another trip.

oops! did I just hijack this thread????

CB is my Father and I can assure you, not only will he remember your name, but he will welcome you, feed you, talk your ear off, take you fishing, give you something from his garden, give you eggs and about anything else you might need. He is one-of-a-kind.
CB is what America is all about. He is a perfect example of what made this country great.
Hey Donny, I can second that from exsperiance, he is one of kind. I didn't know you where a GHSer, You ought to share some of your expertise here from time to time when applicable. Oly
Well darn....that's not what I expected although I should have. 60 Minutes made "potential risks" the star of the show....that sucks.
Not being involved in the O&G industry whatsoever, I felt like maybe I viewed both the CSI episode and last night's 60 minutes more like the average Joe, except that through GHS.com I have learned more than most people are aware of.

The CSI episode struck me as being pure propaganda - the average viewer seeing all that would assume O&G professionals were all criminals. The show was so graphic that I actually stopped watching before it ended - I knew a severed lamb's head and exploding water shooting flames into the sky would prey on my thoughts indefinitely, as they still are now.

The 60 Minutes program fared a little better with me - like BirdDawg, I went away wondering did Barack Obama write the script making sure nobody missed hearing that every negative thing that happens in the industry is Bush and Cheney's fault because of their involvement with Halliburton.

It seemed like in the end CBS at least made a slight effort to say the promise of natural gas production is important to the U.S., but overall my impression was the program was slanted...and I've come to view the way this administration "nudges" public opinion to be the way they set the stage to promote their own agendas.
It is Bush and Cheney's fault because of their involvement with Halliburton
I suppose we could put it in the same category as "Enlightening Entertainment," couldn't we?

I pointed it out as a TV show IN GENERAL in as much as "60 Minutes" is a TV show, in as much as ANY TV show is exactly that, no more, no less. And the selection of shows aired is influenced by viewer ratings that are used to solicit advertiser $$$$ the same as on ANY NETWORK. It is up to the viewer to exercise the gray matter ( and I'm not talking about one's hair color here) to discriminate what is fact and what is DRAMA. "Potential" hazards are just that, POTENTIAL. Can't sue anyone over the potential for wrongdoing, though, last I heard. lol

Now, that CAN be applied to the discussion about "60 Minutes."

I've lumped this specific CSI episode and this particular 60 Minutes more or less together because it struck me almost like two strikes against natural gas production in less than one week - the timing seemed more than pure coincidence. Now I feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to fall, what's on the horizon to influence how the public feels about natural gas production and how long before whatever it is is presented?

Maybe I'm just a total lunatic but it seems to me like the Obama administration is so predictable that I've come to know what to expect. Whatever the objective at the moment, it's always like they're following the same game plan...only I have to believe it's all become a bit more obvious than they think. We're all actually not too dumb to understand, what goes on around us and affects our lives is not too deep for us to comprehend AND we've learned the past two years that we're maybe a whole lot more willing to stand up for ourselves than we realized.

When you've got a TV show one night promoting absolute horrors (a severed lamb's head, exploding water, etc.) related to the O&G industry and then another show a couple of nights later making sure everyone sees dead cows and flaming tap water, it just seems more than coincidental to me.
