J-B Oper. Co. request to "redefine Lower CV Zone 10,030' to 12,100'..."

Question: Why would Commissioner of Conservation grant to J-B Oper. Co., et al, (or any other O&G, E&P) a "redefining" of the Lower Cotton Valley Zone (Reservoir A)"...(or any other Zone, for that matter)...."in the Elm Grove Field"...(or any other field, for that matter)..."as being that gas/condensate bearing interval encountered between depths of 10,030 feet and 12,100 feet (electrical log measurements) in the J-W Oper. Co.-Cohort Energy et al. 22 No 1 Well, located in Section 22, T16N, R13W, Caddo Parish, La...

Along with 10 additional requests...including application to drill in these sections in the Hosston Zone/Res. A, CV Formation/Res. A, and Lower CV Zone/Res. A... and somewhere they include the kitchen sink, I think...
J-W, et al., is force pooling all sections shown on their "map," to include Sect. 17, 19, 20, and 21...as these sections contain J-W's "proposed unit wells."

Again, I ask, why the "redefining of the depths" of the Lower Cotton Valley Zone in this application to the C. of Conservation? I understand the intend of the land grab of the sections, I am not quite sure if I understand the depth change request... Dare I say (imo) that these "requests" are NOT geared toward improving the lot of mineral owners in these sections.

Thank you for your responses. I do appreciate every bit of info that I have learned from all you fellow "shalers."

The letters are coming folks. So I hope we are all prepared to see life moving at an even quicker pace around the HS.

Can you explain this?... because I don't understand. I have read through the Public Hearing Applications for Elm Grove Field going back to January, and could find only one application that requests a definition of the Haynesville Reservoir A (Hearing Date June 3, app. #784). There are many requesting to define Lower Cotton Valley Reservoir below ~10,000 feet. Thanks!
ShaleGeo:

I AGEE WITH YOU MORE THAN 500%!!!!! I WOULD NEVER SIGN MY MINERALS TO AN OUTFIT THAT IS ATTEMPTING TO UNDERCUT MY RIGHTS IN SUCH A MANIPULATIVE MOVE AGAINST US!

Thank you ShaleGeo, for your clear and honest, straightforward answer. Refreshing to see in a landscape often filled with "shadiness and shadows."

I hope all NWLa mineral owners will read your comment, take heed, and IMMEDIATELY call, fax, and write Mr. James H. Welsh, our Commissioner of Conservation and VOICE YOUR DISDAIN and INSIST A STOP BE PUT TO THIS BEFORE IT GETS STARTED!

My letter was mailed today!

Dear Bob McGilly,

Thank you for your comments. I will post all of this information on the Shreveport Times Haynesville Shale blog, and if you do not mind, I will give atribution to you for your explanation (also to ShaleGeo for his).

I hope all citizens of NWLa will contact Governor Jindal immediately and pressure him to keep our mineral leases from being swindled away by these leasing tactics. If it takes a petition, etc., I want to be the first to sign it.

Haynesville Shalers, please wake up and speak as loudly as you can!

No wonder so many "applications" to the state-after the 1st of January 08-contain these clauses.

This kind of stuff hits squarely below the belt.

We need action NOW!

DrWaveSport,
It looks like just the beginning of stuff like this; this could be "speculation" on a whole different level. I am following along, trying to understand the basics, but, this seems to delve into the realm of complicated. I hope to give up soon.

In the cotton valley field (Webster Parish) most of the newly permitted wells are at between 11K and 12.5K in depth and are being referred to as CV or Gray Sands. I thought the Haynesville would be at this depth are they (o/g) playing around with these designations.
Based on the burial history of the North Louisiana Salt Dome Basin well api no.1711920195 in the cotton valley field shows the smackover at ll,500 +/- feet, the gray sands based on the publication of the geology of Webster parish puts the gray sands above the 8,500 foot level which is the top of the cotton valley not the bottom. Yes, they are pulling one to get around the original unitization clause in my opine. I think it is time to get the Governer involved with the commissioner of conservation. With him in the limelight the time is NOW!
We rec'd this letter also. Here is what I don't understand. If we have land in one of those sections (27) with a lease that is about to expire.....will this force pooling hold that lease due to the activity in section 22???? I don't quite get the force pooling of sections. I am more than happy to write, fax, or e-mail!!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Dr, but several operators (including J-W Operating, Petrohawk [throught affiliates KCS and WSF) and Camterra) have already snuck through several dozen of these redefinitions in Elm Grove. J-W is trying to do it in Caspiana Field also in the well right off of Ellerbe road.

They are claiming it is for "operational convenience," but I think Bob McGilly is right about the subtext.

Probably the worse offender is Encana, which is forming "Jurassic" units down in Bull Bayou Field. These so-called units combine the Lower Cotton Valley, Bossier Sand, Haynesville Shale and the Smackover in one big mega-unit.
Greyshades:

I look forward, always, to your opines. Yes...I read almost all of the "legal notices" beginning in March 08 forward, and saw this "request" in many of them.

This would come under the heading of the most fraudulent and deceptive business practices I have seen (except for Enron, etc.). I see the door open for a huge class action lawsuit down the "shale" road.

Haven't the landmen/middlemen/O&G reps, etc. been ranting and raving on these "shale" websites about the "poor" mineral owner who got suckered into signing absolutely rottenly low-balled leases..."hey, you didn't have to sign them"...or..."business is business"...or..."you should have done your homework first!"...or..."you better sign to NOW, or you are going to be left out"...and MUCH MORE BS! (again, I am yelling now.)

IF THIS IS THE WAY O&G WANTS TO DO BUSINESS IN NWLa...NO ONE SHOULD SIGN ONE DAMN LEASE IN THE WHOLE HAYNESVILLE SHALE...UNTIL THIS IS PRACTICE IS STOPPED. (IM-NOT SO HUMBLE-O)

THIS IS A LAND GRAB OF MEGA PORPORTION...IT IS A MONEY GRAB THAT WILL MAKE BONUSES AROUND HERE LOOK LIKE DAY-OLD-GARBAGE.

I LIVE OFF OF ELLERBE ROAD/WALLACE LAKE ROAD...I WANT THIS STOPPED TODAY!!! INJUNCTION...CEASE & DESIST ORDER...SOMETHING!

ARE THERE ANY ATTORNEYS OUT THERE LISTENING?

THESE "DEPTH/NAME CHANGE" SWITCHAROOS WILL ALLOW THE O&GS TO STEAL THE HAYNESVILLE SHALE OUT FROM UNDER OUR FEET...And, it won't matter what is in your lease contract...if you're the lessor!

OUR MAYOR...OUR GOVERNOR...OUR STATE REPRESENTATIVES...BETTTER GET A HOLD OF THIS IN A DAMN HURRY!!! OR I SAY...OUT OF OFFICE TO YOU ALL...IN A HURRY...INCLUDING THE COMMISSIONER OF CONSERVATION!

THERE...I said it...I have sounded an alarm...and, I hope it will not go unheard...

DrWAVeSport 7/11/08 a.m.

P.S. In this country, a kid can be arrested for stealing a piece of candy from a Wal-mart! Are we nuts????????
Just a thought. Mr Madhurendu Kumar ,Director of Geology for
the Louisiana convservation Dept. should be called and check
out his thinking -as a geologist. Mr Kumar was at Mayor Glover's
meeting that was held in Shrevport and gave a presentation.
I think a geologists and if enough of land owners would question
this maybe it might make a difference. It did with the leg. tax
raise. His phone number 225-342-5501. THIS AINT RIGHT!!
Yep. They have been flogging that Tenneco well in Bienville Parish to death on these "redefinitions."
Does this affect people that live outside of the unitized zone as it is defined now in the Cotton Valley area. Or is this just going to affect the depth of the unitized zone.
