The Senate just voted on the NAT GAS Act offered as an amendment (#1782) of the
Transportation Bill #1813.
The amendment failed by 9 votes. Senator Vitter was one of the nay votes. He voted against the best interest of the people of Louisiana. Be sure to remember this.

Dr. WaveSport, I went too hard and I'm obviously no gentlemen at this time, let me scale back a notch or two. I still mostly disagree with your arguement. But that's ok!
So your saying that because other countries don't have a free market approach to energy, neither should we? We could use that same logic to take away many freedoms tha we still enjoy. Our citizens will make the decision on energy with their pocket books and it won't be a government fiat that declares what that energy source will be.
I won't get too sophisticated with my come back. My Granny always said "two wrongs don't make a right". We don't need to follow Venezuela's lead when it comes to energy policy.
This proposal was a closed loop - the people who benefited from the subsidy would also pay the fuel tax later. That makes it totally different IMO. People who did not use/benefit from natgas would not pay the fuel tax.
.
and, I agree with those who say THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD. Perhaps there should be, but around the WORLD traditional O&G gets lots and lots of tax breaks - as do other forms of fuel (renewables?) It's not a level playing field and natgas is behind. Sure, maybe these low prices will pump up demand. But, who on this board wants low prices????
Why get the government involved at all? History has proven that to be problematic at best.
KB,
Great Debate... But, your logic fails me...
Governments run the World... WE don't. Just because I get to VOTE doesn't mean I get the NEXT Vote down the line... The Guy or Gal I voted for gets that VOTE... Those we elect get to make the most Important VOTES for "U.S." We pretty much lose alot of power after Our Candidate wins. Then the Lobbyists get a hold of them... The BIG $$$$$.
I believe "subsidies and incentives" work when NEEDED. Not Carte Blanche. But, without some "help" sometimes, and some "debt" sometimes... Not many of U.S. would be where WE are today... Including me.
I donate all the time. Makes my soul shine.
Just ask Chesapeake how much I've "donated" to them. LOL
Just joking per "donation" to CHK. It's really a substantial "subsidy." LOL
Have a Great GHS St. Patrick's Day Weekend, KB.

Well I'm just no fan of getting government involved in any way, especially when it's not needed.
I think nat gas is a winner.
After I posted earlier I went look at the comments section of an article about this bill on the Huffington post. All of the left leaning people were horrified that it appeared the democrats were in bed with T-Boone Pickens. So I asked myself why would the democrats in power join in with drilling interest to the horror of their environmentalist friends ?
My answer is because they too realize nat gas is a winner long term, so why not pass the bill and take credit for it, then they can use this bill as leverage when it comes time to pay the piper down the road.
Natural gas is the obvious choice for America right now it can stand on it's own.
You have a nice St. Patricks day too.
KB,

I read every word of Keith and the Good Dr. and I really learned a lot. I'm not up on politics, as I should be, but I think they both taught me a bunch. I love debates and read to the last word to see just how it turned out. I think they are still friends. The Dr. won, I'll never vote for Vitter again.
Thanks for the knowledge. SL
Shirley the Dr. may have won the debate in your view, but the outcome of the natural gas industry asking government to assist them has unknowable conseqeunces at this point. We have a long history of unintended consequences when what should be a free market, is assisted by government. Once you open that door it's hard to close it again. Only time will tell!
I'm sure we'll have many good debates in the future. Myself, I'll debate a ham sandwich.
Here too. LOL
We may be more "akin" than you think. LOL
Roger that!
I wish I could partake in an adult beverage, but I'm sitting offshore Louisiana on a ultra deepwater drilling rig. In all honesty my anything that will help natural gas get to where I think it will be will help me financially, but my political and economic philosophy differs from my pocket book in this instance.
In saying that I won't be turning any money down, due to my internet forum moral standards.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
