They must have set a cement plug to isolate the bad section of hole where they left drill string. Then they set a whipstock after drilling the cement plug out to 9510'. A whipstock is used to deviate the hole away from its current trajectory to a new wellpath... in this case it sounds like they are getting a do-over on the curve and lateral. As far as losing the well, this is one way that you keep from doing just that - you re-plan and drill a new hole. Hopefully this will keep them from losing the well.
yes, they lost the bottom of their hole. So they came up to good hole, and will now try again.
Thank you for the info. Are there any further updates since last Wednesday?
4/09/2012 | 05 | 04/07/12: SET 7" LINER. THE TOP OF LINER @ 7693' & BOTTOM OF LINER @ 10,000'. 04/09/12: NIPPLING UP @ 10,000' I don't know exactly what the above means, but I take it that they are still in the process of re-starting the lateral. |
It means they intalled a liner in the hole to hopfully prevent them from losing the hole again.
Oh! Well let's hope they have much better luck this time. Thank you and The Baron for updating me.
Its not just the depth, but the type of rock. The BD is obvously very difficult to deal with
As of 4/30/2012, the Ora well is reported drilling at 13678' and doing a bit change, so they have drilled about 3000 feet of their lateral, which we now think will only be around 5000 feet.

Has anyone heard if they have finished the lateral on this well. serial #244319
05/04/12: TOTAL DEPTH REACHED. 05/05/12: RE-TEST BOP'S. 05/07/12: LAYING DOWN DRILL PIPE.
thank for info I guess completion process starts next?

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
