IMO that 49 days is about 3 times what it should have taken to drill this well had they had no drilling problems. For example, with Nabors rig #735 we drilled to base of LSBD (11,942 ft.) in 14 days in the Sanders Heirs well. Formby well took about same time.
Glad I don't have WI in Whiting well. But, these kind of problems can occur to anyone on any given well. I still like WLL. However, I think they made bad choice for rig. IMO they will get it together and be good operator.
,
The Jackson well was reporting "fishing" by the time the surface casing was set. And the last two reports have been at the same depth (9768'). This is one expensive well with no TD reported yet. I agree. They need a different drilling contractor. Maybe they should see if SWN would supply one of their top drive rigs on a one well contract. SWN sure isn't using them at the moment.

ENERGY DRILLING #7 56 DAYS DRLG @ 9768' 7/12/13
How long have they been stuck Skip? Sounds like this hole going to be one huge money pit.
A least three weeks. I'm not sure why they haven't P&A'ed or side tracked by now.
John,
This rig doesn't bring the day rate Nabors brings or any of the larger rigs. They can drill longer and still be cheaper for the operator. Contrary to the explanation that this company may need to get another drilling contractor, it may not be the case with this well or any well where the problems that are occurring here are being encountered. SWN has had their problems with a couple of wells from hell also.
It is a fact that over 90% of the time when there are hole problems when drilling a well it is NOT the rig that is causing the problems. It is decisions that are made by the company engineers on HOW to drill the well that causes problems. Types of mud, drill rate, bit, size of casing, the list goes on and on can all be a factor in problems very similar to the ones being encountered by this company. The rig drills the well how they are told by the operator how to drill it.
Good rule of thumb to remember: Hole problems = company side decisions. Above ground problems = rig problems. You can have down times due to failures of equipment on the rig but, very-very seldom can the rig itself be causing the problems with the hole. Hope this helped!
Good explanation, David. And plausible. However regardless of where the fault may lie or the day rate of the rig, 56 days to drill to 9768' is not good. And the SWN drilling problems in the early wells was reported and should have been anticipated.
You are right that 56 days is not good. It is not. However, to say another drilling contractor is needed is not an informed answer based on what may be the actual circumstances surrounding the problems being encountered here.
It's as informed as your speculation that it's not the drillers fault. You're entitled to your opinion. As I am to mine.
I am sorry you did not take the time today when I called you to enable you to ask questions directly about your speculations. You see, I wasn't speculating - I was informed.
I asked why it has taken so long to drill the well. You did not provide an answer. Perhaps you would prefer to do so here.
Yes I would! It certainly wasn't for any of your speculative reasons mentioned above nor would any of your ideas of top drive rigs from SWN make a difference. I assure you, taking this much time is not hurting the landowner(s) in any way. Quite to the contrary, the results of drilling this well and the time taking to drill it could very much benefit every landowner in that area. Not speculation, not guessing, not my opinion. Answers based on facts I know. You should know I cannot tell all I know or how I know sometimes.
Heck, I can remember when I took you to see your first well up close and explain it to you and tell you about how wells are drilled and drilling rigs. Wasn't that about 4 years ago? You've learned a lot and how much you have learned and picked up about drilling!! You have done a great job of helping folks on here on the land leasing and agreement side! Keep up the great work!!
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
