A choke is a valve used to control the flow of gas from a well. It is made of hardened steel. Typical opening is 1 inch in diameter. It is designed so that you can see how much it is opened by looking at a numbered dial on the valve It is marked off in 64 sections. So if a well is set at 32/64, it is open half way. Look at the picture I use. It is a choke that has been taken apart to be repaired. Usually a well is never run at a open choke unless it is a well that produces very little gas with little pressure. High pressure gas can cut steel pipe like a knife.
