An Energy Independence Plan
With the recent drop in energy prices, I expect to see a decline in the "upset" over our dependency on foreign oil. However, now that we have seen the future, $150 oil and $5 gas, we have a great opportunity to change one of the greatest weaknesses of the USA.
The US needs to become energy INDEPENDENT. I am not saying we should not buy foreign oil or foreign energy when the price is right. However, I will and do promote any reasonable plan that would lead us to a time when we could tell OPEC - "SO THE ____ WHAT! We dont care if you cut production. We will rely on our own resources."
The Pickens Plan, a mid-term step to reach a long-term goal, is just such a plan. The idea is to build the infrastructure needed to use wind and natural gas as a mid-term source of energy until alternate and renewable energy sources, found on US soil, are developed. It is a step in the right direction.
The idea is not flawless. If you have a better one, lets hear it! In the meantime, we are all on Go Haynesville Shale due to our interest in natural gas. The Pickens Plan will create a higher demand for natural gas, YOUR natural gas. This will lead to larger royalty payments and higher lease bonuses. Please look at the plan carefully. It could be something that not only benefits the nation, but brings an economic boom home to the Ark-La-Tex.
Before anyone ever starts with the whining and moaning, I am sure Mr. Pickens will make millions from the sale of natural gas interest that he owns. Others will make fortunes from selling windmill parts, laying pipelines, flipping leases, etc. I would rather those dollars be here, in the USA, rather than being spendt to build some palm shaped island in Dubai! I would rather see redneck mineral owners driving Cadillac pick-ups to their 2-story mobile homes than Iranians riding tricked out camels to the friday nite belly dance!

The group will ask you to support a movement calling for our leaders to enact and Energy Independence Plan within 100 days of our new administration. They are NOT asking for this plan to be "The Pickens Plan"! It is simply an effort to force congress to take a step toward ending our energy dependence on countries that kill their own citizens in any attempt to harm the USA. Whether you decide to support the Pickens Plan or not, at least support something.

Thanks for your post. There are many on this site that do understand the impact to our own interests that is within the Pickens Plan. The more it is explained, the better the understanding and hopefully the more who will join in supporting the effort toward energy independence in the USA.
It amazes me that the national media has yet to grasp an understanding of how available and abundant natural gas is in this country and what a huge difference it will make to our economy when commercial transportation is fueled by compressed natural gas. I’ve been watching interviews the last several days with Boone Pickens and without exception, the interviewer seems to have a sort of bias against natural gas as an alternative to oil. I believe this comes from simple lack of background education on the viable use of CNG and the lack of existing technology to move heavy transportation with fuel other than oil or natural gas. The media seem to think that the politically correct option is electric/hybrid. That may be true for light vehicles but not a current option for trucks.
Reality will eventually open eyes. -

I agree that CNG for transportation is a "No Brainer". I sometimes wonder if skepticism of the Picken's Plan is more related to the wind portion of the formula. Those who wish to support the use of CNG may need to consider decoupling the two in order to gain political support. Wind energy should be an element of a long term national energy policy but acceptance and consensus may take some time. We need CNG Now!

And....CNG Now is a realistic goal. Very good idea to separate the two parts of the plan, CNG and Wind Power. That certainly might get more attention drawn toward CNG.
Some people seem to think that alternative energy means giving up driving and taking public transportation or riding bikes to work. The Sierra Club joined in support of the Pickens Plan because NG is considered a "green" fuel but that endorsement alone might tend to scare some into thinking that they'll be asked to harness up the mule to the wagon to go to the grocery store. -

Henry. YES! I have submitted a proposal for a "local CNG demonstration project" to President-elect Obama's transition team. It was a brief outline of why Shreveport-Bossier would be the ideal ground zero for the introduction of CNG for municipal and private transportation use. Other than some off-the-cuff discussions with some of the members, I have not taken any additional actions. If the new administration is committed to CNG as a key component of a new national energy policy, and I think they are, they have to begin somewhere. Why not here? And why shouldn't GHS take a leading position in lobbying local, state and federal officials? I think the membership has the potential to become a persuasive lobby. Henry, are you ready to move down here and help? Just kidding, how's the weather in Ohio? Hey, Keith could you give us all a break down of how many members we have by state?

I grew up in Shreveport. The property I own in DeSoto Parish I inherited from my grandparents over 30 years ago. Over 30 years ago, I started work for SWEPCO. I was moved to Dallas by CSW the parent company of SWEPCO, and later, moved to Columbus, Ohio by American Electric Power Company (AEP) when they acquired CSW. I am retiring from AEP the end of this year, and plan to move back. So save a spot for me. I would like to help.
