The state Senate has approved a bill guaranteeing the oil and gas industry a majority of the seats on the commission that regulates the industry.
By a 20-7 vote, with 7 not voting, the Senate approved legislation requiring that a majority of the nine-member Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission be experienced in the development, production and transportation of oil or gas.
Senator Gene Jeffress of Louann, the proposal's sponsor, said the industry already holds six of the commission seats, and said it would be "common sense" to guarantee the industry a majority.
Opponents said they were concerned the measure would give industry too much power, especially as exploration of the Fayetteville Shale natural gas formation continues.
The bill has passed in the House. It now goes back to the House to concur with a Senate amendment.

Makes sense. Populate a commision with members knowledgable in what they are supposed to regulate.
