LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Senators Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma have introduced a bill they say will increase the number of vehicles that use natural gas and propane as fuel.

The bill provides a tax credit to consumers who buy a natural gas or propane vehicle and a tax credit for the installation of natural gas and propane refueling stations.

It also establishes a natural gas and propane vehicle research and development program within the Department of Energy. And it calls for a study into increasing the number of vehicles in the federal fleet that run on natural gas or propane.

The senators say that based on recent retail gasoline prices compared to residential natural gas prices the cost savings for natural gas vehicles could be nearly $500 a year.
