Posted by Press Release • March 2, 2011 • Printer-friendly FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 2, 2011 Elk Grove, CA –The City of Elk Grove has partnered with Clean Energy Fuels Corp. to officially open the first fast-fill Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in southern Sacramento County. The station will be used to fuel the city’s fleet of 43 CNG buses and will be open to other transit agencies and the general public 24 hours a day. The new fast-fill station, located at 9050 Elkmont Drive near the City of Elk Grove’s Corporation Yard, will offer the City a significant cost savings due to considerable reductions in fueling time and wear and tear on vehicles. The new station provides a fast-fill at full pressure in just under 10 minutes with no travel time required. Previously it would take e-tran staff nearly an hour to fill a bus at a slow-fill station, and more than 30 minutes of travel time to either South Sacramento or Davis stations. “The City of Elk Grove is raising the bar for clean energy standards and is committed to the use of environmentally friendly, ultra low emission technologies,” said Mayor Steven Detrick. “The new fast-fill station offers a tremendous benefit to both the environment and the City’s bottom line.” CNG, a substitute for gasoline, diesel, or propane fuel, is a more environmentally clean alternative to those fuels. CNG vehicles are required to meet the City’s designated alternative fuel path as prescribed by the California Air Resources Board. The new facility was made possible through a public-private partnership between the City of Elk Grove and Clean Energy, a firm that specializes in alternative fueling systems with investments in fueling facilities throughout California. The firm has delivered CNG fueling options to numerous transit agencies, including the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District. The station, opened after nearly two years of development, is owned, operated and maintained by Clean Energy. The City used Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) funds to assist Clean Energy with the development and installation of the fueling facility. The City of Elk Grove estimates an annual savings of $200,000 due to reduced fueling and travel times.
