Exxon/XTO deal will get the Congressional scrutiny

ExxonMobil's planned takeover of natural gas shale player XTO will be the focus of a planned hearing by a subcommittee of the House's Energy and Commerce Subcommittee next week.

The Subcommittee on Energy and Environment will hold a hearing titled "The ExxonMobil-XTO Merger: Impacts on U.S. Energy Markets," on Wednesday, January 20.

The witnesses include Exxon Mobil Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson, and XTO Chariman Bob Simpson. Exxon confirmed Tillerson will be there.

Plans for a hearing were previously announced, but the title doesn't seem to indicate that hydraulic fracturing will be a topic.

A webcast of the hearing will be available at www.energycommerce.house.gov.
