Yeah, a Mayor that will not give the law enforcement a pay raise, a Gov that had to be pushed to the limit before he veto'd a raise that officials did not deserve and a President thats gonna raise the tax's to unbelievable amounts---SAD

It's hard to hand out raises, no matter how much they may be deserved, when your budget for the year is eight million in the red.

Also..I think we all agree the cops need a raise, but so do the firefighters. They tend to recruit from simarlar pools, giving only one group a raise will hurt the other.

Also...Don't forget the politics within the police dept. that got in the way.

The councils proposal was to benifit the younger less experianced cops the most. This caused the cops with more senority to push for a veto. Councilman wooley was trying to target the cops that they are having the hardest time retaining.

It's obvious why the cops should, protecting you on a daily basis, versus washing and waxing a fire truck untill your called upon, Firefighters certianly have all the respect in the world, but more so than a cop---nahhhh--cop gets my vote unless they stop me :)

Kenny,

Remember this (coming from a former Shreveport Firefighter), firefighters work 10 24hour shifts in a 30 day period. That translates to 60 hrs. a week. Do Police Officers work that amount of hours?

Now, granted, there is much down time at the Fire Station. Maybe Police Officers have as much down time while on patrol, I can't testify to that.

Both professions have earned and deserve the utmost respect from every citizen. Both professions respect the other. They're brothers-in-arms. Comparing them in who should be paid more, "get more votes", deserve more credit or respect is a SOCIAL TRAVESTY!!!!!

DON'T GO DOWN THAT ROAD!!!!

No one cares about the firemen till they pull you out of a burning house or cut you out of your wrecked car. Both Jobs, police and firefighters, require long hours and putting their lives on the line to help others.

Does the motorcycle cop giving tickets on the parkway deserve as much as the fireman rushing into a burning house? I think we need to keep prespective and remember they ALL do a thankless job and deserve better pay.

Fireman are on locomotives, they work for the railroad.

Yea, I know alot of firefighters, what you say it somewhat true. They do fine money wise, most work secondary jobs. The money comes at the end of your career, 25 years, full retirement, no bad in your 40's. I'll be working another 20 years minimum, so I'll save my pity for the military.
