I have a 40 acre tract in Haughton LA that is currently not being leased. I have been approached several times but was very skeptical of signing a lease out of fear of being taken advantage of. Does anyone know if they are still looking to lease in that area, and who is the best company to deal with that is fair to the land owner?

Not CHK.

yea i am aware of there mis-dealings in the area. I will avoid them like the plague

There is no leasing on-going in the Haughton area of which I am aware.  If there is any interest it might be for shallow oil.  The Haynesville Shale is not economic in that vicinity and I know of no other interest involving deep targets.

Thanks Skip

Well from what Skip says, you would have been the one taking advantage of them instead of vice versa, which was what you were afraid of.

Lesson learned I hope.

Yea it sounds like it. especially if it was not profitable to drill in that area. Oh well guess I missed out on that chance.

It's called "paralysis by analysis". next time remember that a bird in hand ............

Will, I know that you were probably trying to get the best deal that you could.  Sorry that it did not work out.  Like Skip said maybe there will be some interest for the shallow oil.

Thats ok. You can't miss what you never had. No worries though. I can wait. My father had a survey done some 25+ years ago that yielded some promise of possible shallow oil.

IMO one of the great services provided by GHS is as a means to look back at how the Haynesville Shale Play unfolded and how mineral owners reacted to the excitement, hype and deluge of uninformed opinions by those with no knowledge in managing minerals.  So many mistakes.  So many disappointments.  So much uninformed wishful thinking.  The Haughton area is probably the very best cautionary tale in the whole play.  For those who would care to learn something from the experience.  Go back in time through the GHS archives and read the discussion threads.  Pay attention to the dates of the responses in the many threads.  Use this link:

I agree with Skip that one of the best things about GHS is the history it contains. We have had a front row seat for the development of a new energy source. I have been waiting for this for over 40 years.

I've long thought that the content of GHS should be preserved for future researchers - both in the O&G field and also in human psychology. GHS has provided a window into the "fear vs greed" push-pull that is in many of our financial decisions. This blog is of enormous historical importance for both ever changing markets and human psychology that never seems to change.

Hopeful, I imagine that many members are unaware of the fact that excepting posts by members who have left the website the discussions and responses from day one of GHS are contained in the archive. To access the archives go to the command, "View All" just below the list of current discussions on the Main Page.  Then enter a key word in the search box and click on the magnifying glass.  Unfortunately the archive does not organize the discussions chronologically.  Members should pay attention to the date of the discussions and responses in order to have some context.  Try several different key words or phrases to find discussions with subjects of interest.
