Shreveport Times FRONT PAGE article on 3/17/2009: "Haynesville Shale Wells Producing HUGE NUMBERS:

For all you shalers that don't have access to the Shreveport (Louisiana) Times (or perhaps missed it), I found the following points of interest in their FRONT PAGE article of 3/17/09 entitled, "Haynesville Shale wells producing HUGE NUMBERS". :

1) ". . . Some natural gas companies have decided to scale back drilling to ride out the economic storm. However, some of the major players (Petrohawk, Chesapeake, etc.) are investing MORE money in the play." 'We've scaled back our overall budget (spokesperson for Petrohawk), but NOT in the Haynesville'. . . ." (my emphysis on the CAPS)

2) ". . . Top 5 producing wells in the Haynesville Shale for the month of December/08: Petrohawk-713.4 million cubic feet (Red River Parish); KCS Resources-655 million cubic feet (Bossier); 315.9 million feet (Bossier), and 285.7 million cubic feet (DeSoto): and Chesapeake- 207.8million cubic feet (Caddo). . . "

3) ". . . Out of the 44 active and producing wellls in the Haynesvillle, EIGHT produced from 100 million to more than 700 million cubic feet of natural gas in December . . . "

4) ". . . the shale wells are up to 10 times better than the typical wells drilled over the past five or six years. . . These are phenomenal wells. . . Even the major players are plesantly surprised by the quality of these wells. . . " (president of TMR Exploration)

5) ". . . Even with the current low price of natural gas, which was trading for about $3.85 per mcf Monday, COMPANIES STILL ARE ABLE TO TURN A PROFIT. . . " (my emphysis added)

6) ". . . Chesapeake announced . . . it will curtail drilling activity across the board by 7 percent this year and maybe another 10 percent if the market continues to worsen. . . but like Petrohawk, NOT in the Haynesville Shale. . ."

7) :. . . Dunlap (again, a Petrohawk spokesperson) said the Haynesville Shale wells pay out quickly, which allows them to reinvest in the shale two or three times a year. That's unheard of in other . . . plays. . . "

Interesting read, eh?

As to "5)", The only companies that are turning a profit have hedges and collars that ensure they receive significantly more than $3.85 per mcf. And quoting The Times is a risky proposition as it has done a less than admirable job of reporting this play.
The Times has done a less than admirable job of reporting in general.
Agreed.
If I could get the obits in thw Wall Street Journal I could cancel my subscription to the Times. Its bad enough that I have to pick up the Bossier paper to get decent sports coverage of the local high schools.
