So, the red number is just to indicate drilling in the outlying TS, not in every TS? And, if those wells that are drilling show production then the possibility for the shale boundary to expand exists. Am I right in that assumption? I misunderstood the key. I thought you were depicting the drilling in each TS.

If the unit number increases, as indicated by the blue color, what does that indicate to the individual such as me?
Glenn. There is nothing to be accomplished by adding the number of rigs drilling or wells completed in townships that have already been proven productive. When wells are drilled further south and east from those proven townships, they are referred to as "step out" wells. Operators are searching for the limits of the productive shale. The blue number represents those townships which have added units since the previous Snapshot map. Those in black have not changed since the previous Snapshot map.
Thanks for the explanation. When an operator establishes a unit does that mean they are considering drilling or are they just establishing their territory?
Units do not guarantee drilling. They do serve as an indicator that a company wishes to accomplish three things, 1) Pool all mineral interests, 2) Qualify to drill the maximum number of wells under the LOC spacing regulations and 3) Drill the wells or designate the company to do so (the operator of the unit). A company generally has a substantial number of acres under lease when they apply for a unit order so a substantial investment has already been made.
Skip,we are in 12w-12n De Soto. The number of units formed seems to be static for sometime and there seems to be little permitting activity. Is therestill an issue with the lignite co in this twnshp?
dale. Much of 12N - 12W has been mined and reclaimed. And land not yet mined can be included in a drilling unit as the lignite mining is only a surface issue. In other words if there is a qualifying well site, a lateral may be drilled under surface not yet mined or being mined. There is a current mining plan on file at the parish Clerk of Court office that you can examine if you need to know the status of a particular tract.
This is probably a dumb question but I have no problem with those, I notice that 17-14 has no units. What might be the reason for this when the surrounding townships have units?
It is the middle of the City of Shreveport.
